Male Stranger in Ski Mask Approaches Girl Near Burr Ridge: Sheriff

The girl struck the man's hand and he took off on Tuesday. Here is a full description.

An eight-year-old girl and her friends were approached on Tuesday by a man they did not know wearing all black with a ski mask, police said.

The man grabbed the handlebar of the eight-year-old’s girl electric scooter and she struck his hand, causing him to flee southbound to a wooded area, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred at about 1:20 p.m. Tuesday on the 9000 block of South Maple Avenue in unincorporated Burr Ridge.

  • 6’4’’ with a thin build
  • Mustache
  • Wore a black ski mask with holes for his eyes and mouth 
  • Wore a black one-piece “stretchy suit” (jump suit) 
  • Wore a black hood over his head
  • Wore black stretchy gloves with metal rings with clear stones

"The man didn’t say anything to the girl or any of the other children present," according to an e-mailed statement from a Sheriff's Office spokeswoman. "None of the children present were injured."

The girl reported the incident to family members, who called police.  A helicopter and Sheriff’s Police K-9 unit assisted in the search for the offender, but no suspects were found.

Burr Ridge Police assisted by searching the area with their all-terrain vehicles and Cook County Forest Preserve Police canvassed the area as well, the statement said. Readers reported that a search was underway Tuesday, but few details were available in the hours following the search.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
