Doug Fuller Looking to Open Sports Bar in Downtown Hinsdale

The family-oriented bar and grill would take up a portion of the Fuller's Home and Hardware space, but only if a change is made to the village's liquor code first.

Doug Fuller said his Dips & Dogs customers often tell him he should open a sports bar in downtown Hinsdale where families can have an inexpensive meal and adults can enjoy a alcoholic beverage or two. Fuller’s going for it, but he and one of his partners say they need a change in the village’s liquor code first. The Village of Hinsdale Administration and Community Affairs (ACA) Committee discussed on May 6 Fuller’s idea to turn a portion of the Fuller’s Home & Hardware space into a family-oriented sports bar and grill, as well as the extension of liquor-service hours beyond 10:30 p.m. on weeknights and 12 a.m. on weekends that Fuller desires. The goal, Fuller said, is to have a restaurant like Palmer Place in La Grange for the people of …

Hinsdale's Savory Spice Shop Closes Its Doors

The store was open for 19 months in the heart of downtown Hinsdale at 42 S. Washington St.

Savory Spice Shop in downtown Hinsdale closed at the end of April, according to the store's Facebook page.  The store at 42 S. Washington St. was in business for 19 months after opening in October 2011 and holding its grand opening the following November. Savory Spice Shop's phone was disconnected when Patch called, and an email to owner David Trout has not been returned. The following message was posted on Savory Spice Shop's Facebook page April 30: Instead let's say until we meet again! Today we open our doors for the last time in Hinsdale. Two new locations are scheduled to open in Chicagoland in 2013. Lincoln Square (4753 N. Lincoln) opens its doors mid-summer in Chicago while a second location in the northern suburbs opens later in …

Downtown Gap Building Housing Hinsdale Artist's Mother's Day Show

The Maureen Claffy Fine Art Fair, which begins Thursday evening and runs through Sunday, will benefit two local nonprofits.

The doors of the vacant Gap building at the corner of 1st and Washington streets in downtown Hinsdale will be open throughout this Mother's Day weekend.  Hinsdale artist Maureen Claffy is selling her fine art, prints and jewelry from Thursday to Sunday and part of the proceeds will go to the District 181 Foundation and St. Isaac Jogues Council of Catholic Women's charity, "Women in Need." The show is called "With Love on Mother's Day: A Celebration of Home and Family." Claffy grew up and currently lives in Hinsdale. This weekend's show will be her biggest solo show to date, and though it was completely planned in only the last 10 days, the community has rallied through email and word of mouth.  It helps that the show's theme is something …

What Would New Downtown Hinsdale Development Look Like?

The Village of Hinsdale Plan Commission last week approved the site plan and exterior appearance for Garfield Crossing, which would fill the vacant space on 1st Street west of Garfield.

The Village of Hinsdale Plan Commission on April 10 gave its support to the site plan and exterior appearance of Garfield Crossing, the proposed two-story development that would fill the currently vacant space on the southwest corner of 1st and Garfield streets, and recommended the zoning and public safety (ZPS) committee does the same.  Patch obtained a couple of renderings of the proposed development from David Kennedy of PPK Architects, the firm that designed the mixed-use development that would house retail spaces on its first floor and a combination of retail and office spaces on its second floor. They can be seen above. Garfield Crossing would stretch from the corner of 1st and Garfield east to the existing set of buildings that …

Thanks for the comment. There actually is a parking lot planned behind the development. It can't be seen in these renderings supplied by the developer, but if you visit the Plan Commission documents at the below link and scroll WAY down (about 3/4 the way), you should see the site plan including parking. It appears there would be about 45 spots. http://villageofhinsdale.org/comm/pln/2013/…   more ›

Another Vehicle Crashes into Building on Washington Street

It is the third time in the last five weeks that such an incident has taken place in the 100 block of South Washington Street in downtown Hinsdale.

Not again.  An SUV jumped the curb Monday and crashed into the former Zak's Place space at 112 S. Washington, the third such car-on-building crash in the 100 block of South Washington that has taken place in the last five weeks. The crash took place at 11:37 a.m. Monday, after the 61-year-old Clarendon Hills woman driving the 2007 Mercedes ML500 hit the accelarator instead of the brake while pulling into a parking stall in front of the property, Deputy Chief Mark Wodka said. "The driver was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision," Wodka said. "She was unharmed." The pictures above were taken just before noon. On Feb. 21 and Feb. 23, vehicles were driven into Steinway Piano Gallery at 120 S. Washington. READ: Piano Gallery …

Trib’s Vettel on CiNe: 2 Stars, Burr Ridge's Peter Burdi ‘Rules Hinsdale’

The vaunted food critic visits Hinsdale’s new Peter Burdi restaurant in the old Hinsdale Theatre and has a lot of praise to offer.

A review by the Chicago Tribune’s Phil Vettel has appeared for Burr Ridge resident Peter Burdi’s new restaurant CiNe Modern Taqueria in downtown Hinsdale, praising the visuals of the dining room and the food alike and stating that the restaurant tones down Burdi’s typical European influences without sacrificing them altogether.  “Peter Burdi isn't yet the king of west suburban dining rooms, but he sure rules over downtown Hinsdale,” Vettel writes, citing also Il Poggiolo and Nabuki in addition to CiNe. He lauds CiNe chef Yanitzin Sanchez, writing that “she always pays attention to the visuals. Her red-onion soup is a playful nod to French onion soup… Chicken breast in mole negro is nothing new, but Sanchez's presentation—the breast topped …

Burr Ridge Resident, 3rd Generation Coffee Grower Opens Café La Fortuna

In addition to serving 100 percent Mexican coffee, Alejandro García-Palacios hopes to help his customers appreciate the growing and roasting process, and "bring coffee culture closer to the consumer."

Alejandro García-Palacios talks about coffee like it is art. “The beauty about coffee is that there are no written rules,” said the Burr Ridge resident and owner of the new Café La Fortuna at 46 Village Pl. in Hinsdale. “Everybody has their own tastes; everybody has their own techniques of growing, their own techniques of processing … their own roasting techniques, their own blends.” And while most of us think little beyond the caffeine jolt of our morning Joe, it’s clear talking to García-Palacios that he hopes to spread his knowledge and appreciation for the coffee bean to all of his new downtown Hinsdale customers. A third-generation coffee grower, exporter and roaster, García-Palacios moved to Burr Ridge in 2006 with his wife Angela …

Locally Owned

Hinsdale News Agency Still a Downtown Sweetspot After 59 Years

With classic candies and a stable of regular customers, the family-owned newsstand is has managed to keep its old-fashioned model in a high-tech world.

When a business is around for 59 years, it means it has regulars. “Every day like clockwork,” Hinsdale News Agency manager Penny Miller describes visits from the store’s frequent customers, who visit 24 E. Hinsdale Ave. to pick up a newspaper, a pack of cigarettes, or maybe just a candy bar. The downtown Hinsdale newsstand has been serving the community since owner Danette Boniecki’s grandfather, Daniel Spinazola Sr., opened the store in October 1953. Daniel Spinazola Jr., Boniecki’s father and 60-year Hinsdale resident, ran the stand for many years before passing it on to his daughter, who has worked shifts since she was a kid living in Hinsdale. “Back years ago we were open until 10 at night,” Boniecki said, explaining that the employees…

Zak's Place in Hinsdale Closing Its Doors Saturday Night

One of the restaurant's owners said disagreement with the owner over rent contributed to the closing of the restaurant, which has served Hinsdale since 2007.

Updated at 12:03 p.m. Friday Zak's Place owners announced Thursday that the restaurant will be closing down this weekend after serving its contemporary American cuisine to diners at 112 S. Washington St. in downtown Hinsdale for five years. "All of us at Zak's Place have made great friends, had fun times and created many wonderful memories with you," reads a Thursday night Facebook post from Yamandú Perez, one of the restaurant's two owners. "But, sadly we can no longer afford the costs of doing business, so we've decided to say farewell." Perez's co-owner, Matthew Van Valkenburgh, said the restaurant's owners said the their first five-year lease ended in August and they were unable to lock down a long-term lease with the owner.  "We …

Hinsdale is great. Period. My husband and I were married in Hawaii and were concerned about finding a place to live that would welcome a gay couple. When we lived in Jefferson park so many people gave us issues. I grew up in Jefferson park and attended a catholic Schiller and my husband is from nearby saugnash. We even had friends who were police officers in the 16th district. Lots if anti gay …   more ›

Visions for Vacancies

What Type of Business Should Go in the Former Gap Kids Space in Downtown Hinsdale?

In our weekly Visions for Vacancies series, Patch asks readers how they would fill empty storefronts around town.

When Gap Kids closed its downtown location earlier this year, it opened up a 2,700-square-foot space at 44 S. Washington St. Village of Hinsdale community development director Tim Scott said the space is narrow and deep, and is in a good spot in downtown. "Its location, mid-block on Washington, makes it a very attractive location for retailers," Scott said. Last week, we asked what should go into the former Gap space at the corner of Washington and 1st streets. This week, we want to know what would be best at in the Gap Kids storefront. Whether it's a new restaurant, clothing store or something completely new, we want to hear what businesses you'd most like to see take over at 44 S. Washington St. in Hinsdale. Share your ideas in the …
