Hinsdale Central junior wrestler Brian Allen beat Neuqua Valley senior Andrew Geers, 4-2, in the 3A state final Saturday night at Champaign's Assembly Hall, capping an undefeated season with a state title and giving his school its second individual first-place finish, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The first-ever Hinsdale Central individual wrestling title was won by Brian's older brother, Jack, in 2011, the Sun-Times reports. Read the full Sun-Times story here. It's the Red Devils first West Suburban Silver championship since 2000, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Brian Owens scored 17 points, Matt Rafferty scored 15, and the Hinsdale Central Red Devils clinched their first West Suburban Silver boys basketball title since 2000 with a 54-39 win over York Tuesday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. WATCH: iHigh's broadcast of Tuesday night's game. The Red Devils advanced their conference record to 10-1 with the win, Sun-Times reports, two games better than the second-place Dukes' 8-3 mark. Next up will be a crossover game with the West Suburban Gold champ on Feb. 20. Overall, Hinsdale Central is 17-5 and has won 11 straight, according to the Sun-Times. There are a lot of athletes from Chicago suburbs—and Patch towns—on some of the best teams in college football this season.
The BCS bowl season has begun, but two area schools will wait until after the new year to play in some of the most prestigious bowl games—and their rosters feature lots of area talent from Chicago suburbs and Patch towns, including three from Hinsdale and one from Burr Ridge. Notre Dame, the No. 1 team in the country, plays Alabama in the BCS National Championship game Jan. 7. And No. 15 Northern Illinois, a surprise BCS team, heads to the Orange Bowl to play No. 12 Florida State on New Year's Day. A number of athletes from Patch towns are on the rosters of these teams, as well as others playing in bowl games over the next few weeks. The seniors were honored Tuesday morning during a signing ceremony before school.
Twelve Hinsdale Central athletes who plan to compete at the college level next year were honored Tuesday morning during a signing ceremony in front of their parents and coaches. The 12 seniors compete in sports that range from football, to tennis, to swimming, and have committed to colleges that include Georgetown, Michigan, and University of Chicago.
