Soaring Eagle Academy Takes Students With Autism to New Heights

The autism academy, which hosted an open house Saturday, opened in Burr Ridge in September of 2010 with only five students and has since grown to more than 30.

Since 1987, Deanna Tyrpak has worked with special needs children to evaluate and treat speech and language disorders. Tyrpak's own 20-year-old daughter has autism, which is what inspired Tyrpak to open a school in Burr Ridge specifically to meet the needs of students with autism spectrum disorders. “[Dominique] took me on this journey ... When she was younger, people would often misinterpret what they saw as behaviors that should be changed,” said Tyrpak. “They were actually her way of communicating; she just couldn’t process the incoming information.” After hearing about a new model for treating Autism, known as the Developmental, Individual-Difference, Relationship-Based model, Tyrpak read a book by Dr. Stanley Greenspan, called The …

'Run the Ridge' Race Raises Funds for Autism Foundation

In addition to raising funds, the event raised awareness about the resources in Burr Ridge for families touched by autism spectrum disorders.

Hundreds of runners gathered in Burr Ridge's County Line Square over the weekend to help raise money for the Turning Pointe Autism Foundation in Naperville. This year's Run the Ridge 5K run/walk, organized by Right Fit, a fitness facility in Willowbrook, aimed to raise awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorders in the Chicagoland area. Codilis and Associates, diamond sponsors for this year's race, chose Turning Pointe as the non-profit organization that would benefited by this year's Run the Ridge.
