Election 2013: What Sets D181 Candidates Apart?

Patch asked the question, and the five District 181 Board of Education candidates provided their answers.

In its 2013 candidate questionnaire, Patch asked the five candidates for Community Consolidated School District 181 Board of Education the following questions: What sets you apart from the other candidates? Here, in alphabetical order, are the candidates' responses: Gary Clarin: "I don’t believe I am unique from the other candidates, but I do believe that my previous and current tenure on several boards, both community and business, my ability to work together and listen to solve issues and advance common goals, and my willingness to take leadership roles, when asked, has provided me with the skill set necessary to be an effective board member." Richard Fitzgerald: "Motivation, perseverance and drive.  I am the only candidate that is …

Election 2013: D181 Candidates on the Curriculum Overhaul

Patch asked the question, and the five District 181 Board of Education candidates provided their answers.

In its 2013 candidate questionnaire, Patch asked the five candidates for Community Consolidated School District 181 Board of Education the following questions: Do you support the district’s approach to curriculum changes since the January 2012 report by gifted program consultant Dr. Tonya Moon? Why or why not? Here, in alphabetical order, are the candidates' responses: Gary Clarin: "I am just getting up to speed on the gifted program and the study by Dr. Tonya Moon. If the board determined that this was a strategic goal and asked the administration and teachers to evaluate it, which I know they did, then after proper research and review it is the responsibility of the board to move forward with it." Richard Fitzgerald: "I applaud the …

The effort on the part of the press is appreciated but the extremely guarded response on the part of the candidates is not -- folks ought to be forthcoming with their real agenda. Oldsters that are supported by the "my tax bill is too high" crowd don't want to tip their hands lest the majority of citizens that live inside D181 primarly for the superlative schools be tipped off to the coming "…   more ›

Election 2013: Board Member Lewensohn Among First 5 D181 Candidates to File

Three caucus-endorsed candidates and two non-caucus-endorsed candidates filed papers with District 181 on Monday to run for the three open seats on the school board in the spring.

It appears Sarah Lewensohn will be the only incumbent candidate in next spring's election District 181 Board of Education election after the current board member filed her papers to run Monday along with four other candidates, District 181 communications director Bridget McGuiggan said. Filing Monday, the first day candidates could do so for the April 9 election, were the three candidates endorsed by the Hinsdale Village Caucus: Gary Clarin, Mridu Garg and Jill S. Vorobiev. Richard Fitzgerald and Lewensohn were filers who did not receive the backing of the caucus. Three seats on the District 181 board are up for grabs in April. The terms of Lewensohn, Yvonne Mayer and Russell Rhoads are all expiring. Rhoads and Mayer have said they will …

D181 Election: Three Up For Re-election Either Not Running, Not Sure

Yvonne Mayer and Russell Rhoads said they won't be seeking a second term, while Sarah Lewensohn said she hasn't made a final decision yet.

Yvonne Mayer and Russell Rhoads, two of the three District 181 Board of Education members whose terms expire next spring, said this week they won't be running for re-election, while the third, Sarah Lewensohn, said she has not yet decided. All three board members are serving their first term on the board. "I’ve been involved with the board from both sides of the table [as a parent and a board member] for over eight years now," said Mayer, whose youngest child is in seventh grade and will finish in the district next year. "I just feel at this point it would be best if some younger parents would step up and participate on things like the school board."  For Rhoads, who said he originally planned on serving two terms, a job change soon after …

For the sake of the children and teachers in District 181, let's hope the next three elected board members are not clones of Lewensohn, who has taken it upon herself to rubber stamp the sweeping changes and elimination of services proposed by the former speech therapist, Renee Schuster, who has no classroom teaching experience.   more ›
