Meet Delores Wehn: Proud Republican, Texting Guru and Insurance Veteran

As this Burr Ridge resident will tell you, it's not just teens that are a fan of texting.

Mother’s Day went well for Delores Wehn. While some were finishing some mother-daughter shopping at the Village Center, Wehn was sipping a hot cup of coffee at Starbucks and watching the sunset between text messages from her friends. What brings you to Starbucks? I just finished golfing and wanted some good coffee after my dinner. We’re regulars here. It’s a nice place to kick back at. What do you do for a living? My husband and I have been in the insurance industry for 30 years. He owns an agency called Robert Wehn and Associates in Darien, and I do a lot of the administrative office work. In today’s day and age, holding your own and keeping a family business afloat is an accomplishment all in itself—especially with Barack Obama in office…

I also love to play bridge.......maybe that is the answer.....   more ›

Meet Saaema Alavi: Architect, Piano Player

This Burr Ridge resident hopes to finish a book that details the challenges and triumphs of career-driven mothers.

On a warm Sunday evening, storefront doors were locking one by one as the last of the stragglers were leaving Burr Ridge’s Village Center. While the general flow of satisfied customers was moving toward the parking garage, Saaema Alavi was the only person walking into the mall. With some food in hand, she strolled up to Bath & Body Works and took a seat on a bench outside the store. What brings you to Bath & Body Works? I work here part-time to put some extra cash in my pocket. I’m on break so I grabbed a snack from down the street. What do you do for a living? I’ve been an architect since 1995. I used to love every aspect of buildings. I would enjoy getting lost in the numbers and schematics, and I could visualize it all coming together …

Meet Steve Less: Crossing Guard, Automotive Enthusiast

Retired executive spends his time making sure kids cross the street safely.

Today is Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Illinois, and Burr Ridge resident Steve Less is no less vigilant about having students walk their bikes across the street and wait for cars to make complete stops at stop signs. He mans his post outside Hinsdale's Oak School four times a day, rain or shine, warmth or cold. Oak School's Parent Teacher Organization and School District 181 officials thanked Less and his colleagues. He received the appreciation showed him, but continued to keep a watchful eye on the street. Do you have a job outside of being a crossing guard? I'm retired. I was the director of operations at Flow Service Corporation in Burr Ridge for 18 years. The company designs and makes seals for water pumps, and it's a fast-paced …

Several parents joined in and were side-by-side with their kids for the activities.   Superintendent Thomas Schneider and board of education member Amanda Frankel led the initiative to get students exercising their brains as well as their bodies. The intent was to remind families that physical exercise and learning go hand-in-hand, especially with young children. Schneider said more than 1…

I attended as a grandmother and helped to register students. The planning, enthusiasm and creativity of the teachers, staff and volunteers was outstanding. Seeing so many students, parents and older siblings participate in this event shows that it takes everyone in a community to raise a child. Way to go Anne M Jeans, you rock! Myrna Frankel   more ›

Plus, getting out of the house is always a reward. What brings you to the park? We’re just enjoying the beautiful weather, finally, after such a long winter. Viewfinder: Burr Ridge Business Shows Fashion, Humility

International designer prepares for Prom season, helps Miss Colorado.

Burr Ridge fashion designer Mac Duggal shocked the fashion world when he met with a struggling Miss USA pageant contestant on March 29 and gave her a free gown. Duggal is an internationally-known designer who has been setting trends for 25 years. He sponsors dozens of pageants, including the Miss Illinois and Miss USA pageants, and said helping 23-year-old Blair Griffith was the least he could do to thank all those who created and sustain the industry. Griffith had just won the Miss Colorado pageant when she lost her job and home. The financial troubles began when her father died of prostate cancer several months ago. Duggal flew Griffith and her mother, Bonita, to Chicago so they could visit the Burr Ridge shop and select a dress. …
