Boys Basketball: Morton's Jarosz Too Much for Hinsdale South

Morton 54, Hinsdale South 53. Jeff Jarosz scores 35 points, including a runner with 18.6 seconds to beat Hinsdale South.

The Hot Read: In a game with four ties and nine lead changes, Morton and Hinsdale South battled for third place in the West Suburban Gold on Friday night. Morton led 21-16 midway through the second quarter, but Hinsdale South went on a 12-4 scoring run to lead at halftime, 28-26.
Coming out of the locker room, Morton senior Jeff Jarosz shot lights out as he tallied 15 points in the third quarter alone. Jarosz's output lifted Morton to a 45-39 lead at quarter's end. Hinsdale South regrouped in the fourth quarter with an 11-2 scoring run of its own. After trading baskets late in the fourth quarter, Hinsdale South junior Brock Benson swished two free throws to put the Hornets ahead 53-52 with 39.5 seconds remaining.

Boys Basketball: Hornets Blitz Blazers in Rout

Hinsdale South 70, Addison Trail 51: Guard Phil Geroge leads dominating second quarter.

The Hot Read: With a slim 13-12 lead late in the first quarter, Hinsdale South forward Bryson Pitts scores five unanswered points in the last minute to help spark a 22-0 Hornets run that kept the game permanently out of reach for the Blazers. The Hornets led 45-16 at the half and 64-27 after three. Addison Trail did manage to score 24 points in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, far, far too late as the Hornets cruised to their sixth conference win of the season and 15th overall.  Patch’s MVP: Hornets guard Phil George scored 17 points. He hit five threes and played exceptional defense in the second quarter, picking up three key steals that helped Hinsdale South build the double-digit lead against the Blazers.  Key stats: Addison …

Boys Basketball: Hinsdale South Can't Close Against Proviso East

Proviso East 75, Hinsdale South 67: Pirates' 22 steals sink Hornets, erase 27-point first quarter.

The Hot Read: A 27-point first quarter by Hinsdale South’s Hornets went for naught. The Pirates forced 22 steals and tied the game at 32-all by halftime, then widened their lead in the third quarter and controlled the game the rest of the way. The Hornets came close a few times in the fourth quarter, but the Pirates’ aggressive halfcourt defense and athleticism were too much, forcing costly turnovers at inopportune moments for the Hornets.  Patch’s MVP: Proviso East point guard Keith Carter scored 22 points and had seven of his team’s 22 steals on the night. If he wasn’t scoring, he was setting up his teammates at the top of the key.  Key Stats: Down 27-16 after the first quarter, the Pirates recorded six steals in the second quarter—three…

Boys Basketball: Hinsdale South Holds Off Quincy

Balanced scoring and clutch free-throw shooting lift the Hornets to a 57-52 victory over the Blue Devils.

Hinsdale South’s Hornets have attained success stringing together wins as they hunt for the West Suburban Gold Conference lead. On Saturday night, the host Hornets got past Quincy’s Blue Devils 57-52 to keep pace with conference leader Downers Grove South. The Hornets (13-6, 4-2) had four players score in double figures: seniors Andy Nkansah and Joe Petrak with 12 points each, and juniors Phil George and Brock Benson with 11 apiece. “This a big momentum boost,” George said. “Coach said coming into this game that we control our destiny. If we keep playing confident like we did tonight, we can win conference.” The Blue Devils (8-10) didn’t go down without a struggle. The Hornets led 36-29 at halftime, with Nkansah scoring 10 points in the …

Boys Basketball: Hornets Sting Morton at Free Throw Line

Hinsdale South hits 17-of-18 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull away in a 66-57 victory on Friday night.

In the days leading up to Friday's game against Morton, the Hinsdale South's boys basketball team emphasized free throw shooting.  “This whole week we worked on free throws and it paid off,” said center Brock Benson, who finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds and sparked the Hornets to a 66-57 victory. Hinsdale South sank 17-of-18 free throws in the fourth quarter after the Mustangs were saddled with foul trouble. Overall, the Hornets hit 23-of-26 from the line.  The game went back-and-forth until the fourth quarter. After a terrible first quarter where the two sides combined for nine total points, both sides took the initiative on offense from the on. Forward Andy Nkansah scored eight second-quarter points—including two three-pointers—to…

Boys Basketball: By George, Hinsdale South Gets Job Done

Junior Phil George paces Hornets with 19 points in come-from-behind win over Wheaton Warrenville South

Hinsdale South stumbled out of the gate but eventually crashed through and brought home a 44-38 boys basketball victory over Wheaton Warrenville South at the Downers Grove North hoops fest on Saturday afternoon. Junior guard Phil George paced the Hornets with 19 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. "Coach always told us never to hang our head because the game's not over in the first quarter," George said of what coach Jim Thomas told his team. George was the only member of Hinsdale South to score in double figures, though, it seemed as if for a while that no Hornet would reach double digits in the scoring column. That's because Hinsdale South struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the game's opening quarter. Senior Ryan Johnson …

Hinsdale South Rolls Through the Fog and Wilmington

Hornets win their second tourney game in a row with a dominant 57-25 victory over Wildcats in DeKalb.

Hinsdale South made sure its 50-mile drive—much of it in thick, dense fog with little to no visibility—was not in vain. "Conditions have been rough the last couple of days," Hinsdale South boys basketball coach Vince Doran said. "(The) drive home (Monday) was treacherous because of snow and today the fog was bad." The Hornets were good. Hinsdale South dominated Wilmington from start-to-finish in a 57-25 victory on Tuesday night as the Hornets notched their second win in a row in the 83rd annual Chuck Dayton Holiday Tournament at DeKalb High School. Hinsdale South defeated Winnebago 73-58 on Monday. The Hornets (6-4) got off to an erratic start, shooting 5-of-22 in the first quarter. Even with early missed layups and wild three-point …

Mustangs Sting Hornets With Fourth Quarter Rally

Downers South overcomes a slow start in road win over Hinsdale South; Ziggy Riauga finishes with 11 points, eight rebounds and six blocks.

Winning conference games on the road, as any coach will tell you, is never an easy task. The Downers Grove South boys basketball team learned that Friday night. The Mustangs rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Hinsdale South 58-52. For most of the game, the Mustangs (4-1, 1-0) struggled against the Hornets (1-3, 0-1) and their ability to drive the ball into the lanes and score off of rebounds. "We have to get better," Downers Grove South coach Jay Baum said. "To our credit, the kids found a way to win, but overall, we have to play better." The Mustangs didn't seem to have an answer for the Hornets' two big men, junior center Brock Benson and senior forward Bryson Pitts, on offense or defense. Pitts scored eight first-half points from …

Hornets Ready to Build a Strong Hoops Season

Hinsdale South boys basketball coach Vince Doran likes what he has to work with at the outset of a new season.

When Hinsdale South boys basketball coach Vince Doran opened his toolbox this year, he found just what he needed to build the foundation for a solid season. Doran found a scrappy point guard, a deadeye shooter and a big man coming into his own. The play of Joe Petrak, Phil George and Brock Benson will spearhead the Hornets' 2010-11 season. "Those three guys are the three guys we expect to lead us in terms of scoring and leadership," Doran said. "And we have depth and some pretty good athletes." The Hornets went 14-12 last season and graduated their leading scorer, Lavonte Brown, to Aurora University. But Doran sees promising talent to make up for that loss, starting with his big man. Benson was listed at 6-foot-5 last season, but now at 6…
