Hinsdale Central Tight End Ian Bunting Commits to Michigan

The 6-foot-6 junior chose Ann Arbor in part because of a recently deceased family member's hope that he would be a Wolverine.

Hinsdale Central tight end Ian Bunting has committed to play his college ball at the University of Michigan after he graduates next year, the Chicago Tribune reports.  The 6-foot-6, 215-pound Hinsdale resident had scholarship offers from big-program schools including Notre Dame and USC, according to SB Nation. Bunting told the Tribune that he chose Michigan in part because his recently-deceased grandmother was a Wolverine and was hoping he'd have the opportunity to play in Ann Arbor. See the full Chicago Tribune story here. "Has a nice, long frame with a lot of room to add weight," a Scouts.com scouting report of Bunting by Allen Trieu reads. "Good, reliable hands and shows ability to make grabs in traffic and along the sideline. Adjusts …

College Football: 3 From Hinsdale, 1 from Burr Ridge Competing in Bowl Games

There are a lot of athletes from Chicago suburbs—and Patch towns—on some of the best teams in college football this season.

The BCS bowl season has begun, but two area schools will wait until after the new year to play in some of the most prestigious bowl games—and their rosters feature lots of area talent from Chicago suburbs and Patch towns, including three from Hinsdale and one from Burr Ridge.  Notre Dame, the No. 1 team in the country, plays Alabama in the BCS National Championship game Jan. 7. And No. 15 Northern Illinois, a surprise BCS team, heads to the Orange Bowl to play No. 12 Florida State on New Year's Day. A number of athletes from Patch towns are on the rosters of these teams, as well as others playing in bowl games over the next few weeks. Many are underclassmen probably yet to see game action, but their names are among some of the most …

Playoffs: Hinsdale Central Ousted After Another Tough Loss to OPRF

A heads-up play by a senior running back led to a Husky win Friday night in the first round of the 8A playoffs.

Senior running back Tom Odell caught a wild 50-yard touchdown pass off of a tipped ball with 1:15 left in the fourth quarter and Oak Park-River Forest came from behind again to beat Hinsdale Central, 28-24, in the first round of the 8A playoffs Friday night in Hinsdale. Trailing 24-21 on that final Huskies drive, sophomore quarterback Lloyd Yates threw a ball down the sideline intended for senior wideout Ryan Nelson. Hinsdale Central safety Andrew Eck tipped the ball away from Nelson, but Odell was in the right place at the right time, caught the ball, and dashed into the end zone.  Odell said he was hoping to be Yates' original target on the play, but he didn't give up on the play when it went to Nelson. "I just put myself in a good …

Football Playoffs: Hinsdale Central Gets No. 5 Seed, Faces OPRF in First Round

The two teams met earlier this month, when the Huskies came from behind to beat the Red Devils in overtime.

Three weeks after Oak Park-River Forest came back from 21 points down to beat Hinsdale Central in overtime, the Red Devils will get their shot at revenge. According to the IHSA football playoff brackets released over the weekend, Hinsdale Central will host OPRF this weekend in the first round of the 8A tournament. The particular day and time for the game has not yet been set. The Red Devils finished the 2012 season with a 7-2 overall record; the Huskies are 6-3. Football: Hinsdale Central Gets Senior Night Win Over Gritty Dukes

The Red Devils head into the postseason with a 7-2 record, but didn't sound satisfied with their play in Friday's season finale.

Senior quarterback Brian Owens completed 13 of 23 passes for 223 yards and rushed for a touchdown as Hinsdale Central eked out a 20-17 win over York and improved its playoff resume in its regular season finale Friday night in Hinsdale. The Red Devils (7-2, 4-2) head into the playoffs after back-to-back wins, but head coach Rich Tarka wasn't too pleased with his team's performance against the Dukes, who finished the season without a win but hung around Friday night and were a defensive stop away from making things very interesting. "We just made enough mistakes to keep us out of our flow," Tarka said. A pair of fumbles, some missed assignments on the offensive line, and some forced throws by the quarterback were among "the little things" …

Football: Hinsdale Central Defense Comes Up Big in Win at Downers North

For the second straight week, a Red Devils opponent went for a game-winning two point conversion late, but Friday the Hinsdale Central defense stepped up.

One week after Oak Park River Forest beat Hinsdale Central on a gutsy two-point conversion call in overtime, Downers Grove North went for two and the win late in the fourth quarter Friday but was turned away by the Red Devils defense in a 21-20 Hinsdale Central win, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. After Downers North’s Brandon Salter ran back an 89-yard punt return for a touchdown with 42 seconds in the fourth quarter, the Trojans decided to go for two and the lead.  "On the decisive play, Hinsdale Central’s Brett Goss shed a blocker and led a host of tacklers who stopped Salter to cement the 21-20 victory in the 78th annual battle for the Old Oaken Bucket at Carstens Field in Downers Grove," the Sun-Times reports.
