Gower 62 Board, Teachers Close to New Deal, President Says

Both the Gower Education Association and the board must vote to approve what the board president told The Doings is indeed a tentative deal before it's made official.

The Gower Elementary School District 62 Board of Education and its teachers union have a tentative deal, Board President Ryan Asmus said in a story by the The Doings published Monday.  Members of the Gower Education Association (GEA) have so far been working this current school year without a contract.  A mediation session on Nov. 20 was the third such meeting. If there is an agreement, the GEA must ratify the contract before the board can vote to finalize it. In a statement released on Nov. 14, before the latest mediation session, the Gower board said the teachers instituted a "slow down" following the first mediation session on Oct. 29, from then working the minimum number of mandated hours.   "After the second mediation session, the GEA…

Gower Parents Urge School Trips

Citing tradition and along with various benefits, a dozen parents urged the Gower School District Board of Education to continue the sixth grade trips to White Pines Ranch.

Citing tradition and along with various benefits, a dozen parents urged the Gower School District Board of Education to continue the sixth grade trips to White Pines Ranch. “I think that trip is invaluable for more than one reason. It’s not just the academic experience that’s provided while there,” parent Julie Albert said Tuesday. “There’s more to it than that. It’s the social component, it’s the bonding of the class. For many of these children its’ the first opportunity they’ve had to go away or be away from home. The learning goes beyond the academics. It’s an individual growth.” For more than three decades the sixth-grade students at Gower Middle School have taken a three-day trip to the Oregon, IL camp as part of the outdoor education…

New Gower Middle School Principal To Start July 1

Tracy Murphy is coming to the Gower District from Thompson Junior High in Oswego.

The Gower 62 Board of Education approved the hiring of Tracy Murphy as the new principal for Gower Middle School Tuesday night. Murphy, who is currently principal of Thompson Junior High in Oswego, will officially begin her duties as principal July 1. She succeeds current Gower Middle School Principal Rebecca Laratta, who last month was appointed to the post of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Innovation. While she is happy in Oswego, Murphy wanted to work in a smaller district, she said. “I think it’s a chance to know the students, the families better when it is (a smaller district),” Murphy said. “I work at a very large junior high right now. We’re 900 students this year, we’ll be 1,000 next year. Going to a …

Report: Judge Orders New Hearing on Objections to Planson's District 86 Candidacy

Because only two board members ruled to dismiss the objections on Jan. 6, the judge ruled that the board must meet on the matter again, according to a Clarendon Hills Doings report.

A DuPage County Circuit Court judge has ordered that District 86 school board members must meet again regarding objections to Jennifer Planson's candidacy for the school board, according to a Clarendon Hills Doings report. Judge Terence Sheen ruled Tuesday that all three members of the Electoral Board must be present in order to rule on an objection to a candidate, the report said. Only school board President Dennis Brennan and Board Secretary Dee Dee Gorgol were present on Jan. 6 to rule against the objections two Oak Brook residents filed. The school board's attorney said that board member George Kumis had been delayed at a train station. Donald O’Neil and Terrence O’Malley objected to Planson's running for the school board on the …

Wanted: School Board Candidates

Gower School District 62 Board of Education has four seats up for election in 2011; and with a Dec. 20 filing deadline looming, only two candidates.

In 2009, four seats were open on the Gower School District 62 Board, but only three people ran. The remaining seat was filled by appointment. The school election could fall short again in 2011, unless at least two residents file by 5 p.m. Dec. 20 to run for office. Four seats are open, and so far only two candidates have filed nominating papers at the district office, 7700 Clarendon Hills Rd., Willowbrook. They are Mark Timko, 8516 Heather Dr., Burr Ridge, and Sehba Kahn, 6330 Breyer Rd., Willowbrook. Both filed their nominating papers Dec. 13. A third person, incumbent Richard Grunsten, has expressed his intention to run,  but as of Dec. 17, had not filed the necessary papers. He was appointed in 2009 to serve a two-year term. If the …

Gower Board Discusses Tax Levy with 2.5% Increase Expected

The Gower School District board talked about its proposed tax levy for the 2011-2012 school year Nov. 16.

Gower School District 62 officials expect to receive $11.4 million from next year's property tax levy, that's about $340,000 more than the $11.1 million expected for the current school year. At their Nov. 16 meeting, Gower officials discussed levying taxes at a time when the value of existing property and the amount of new construction are falling. "This is the first time we've seen EAV (equalized assessed value) fall—where we're projecting a decrease in equalized assessed valuation of property. And so, short sales and foreclosures, closing up businesses and the general decline in the value of property: This is the first time we've seen it," said Gower Superintendent Steve Griesbach. "The second thing is that we've seen the lowest amount …

Gower Schools Receive A+

The Gower School District receives the Bright A+ Award from School Search, reclaiming its spot in the top five percent in Illinois standardized testing.

Gower School District 62 is one of Illinois' best in terms of standardized testing and recently received recognition for its performance. School Search, a private education research and consultation firm based in Kansas City, awarded Gower the Bright A+ Award Sept. 20, one of three given by the organization to qualifying Illinois school districts. "We saw a jump in our student test scores; we jumped about three percent on our ISAT results," Superintendent Steve Griesbach said. "We really put in a systematic plan to improve student performance in lots of areas that involved everyone from teachers to students to parents to the board of education." Gower hasn't won the Bright A+ Award since 2006, but won it every year before that since it …
