Glenbard West Linemen Rise to Top of the Class

Hilltopper seniors Tommy Schutt and Johnny Caspers make Rivals.com's list of preseason Illinois Top 30 recruits from the Class of 2012, with Schutt being No. 1. Downers North names John Sipple as its new boys cross country coach.

The victory bell at Glenbard West High School has been getting a workout over the past two seasons, given the Hilltopper football team’s combined 23-3 record which includes appearances in the Class 7A state title game (2009) and the 7A quarterfinals (last season). College football coaches, scouts and recruiters are getting a workout, too. They’ve been routinely climbing up the hill to Glenbard West to offer players either scholarships or spots on their team. Several seniors from last season’s 10-2 team agreed to play at colleges and universities across the country. Offensive lineman Jordan Walsh, now at Iowa, was the biggest signee, while defensive lineman Zack Marshall landed a scholarship to Illinois State. Running back Nick Burrello and…

No. 16 Ranked Lyons Basketball Completes Conference Double

Narrow win over Proviso West brings squad to 6-0 in West Suburban Silver Conference.

One night after an emphatic triumph in front of an electric, “blacked out” crowd, the Lyons Township boys basketball team replicated its home success with a 72-68 victory over a resilient Proviso West squad. The no. 16 ranked Lions (15-2, 6-0)—according to the Chicago Tribune’s PrepsPlus section—capped off a strong weekend showing with the second of two divisional wins, solidifying their place a top the West Suburban Silver Conference. “This was a game that was a grinder,” Lyons head coach Tom Sloan said. “Proviso West is very good and any time we can beat a team like this is a big win. We were playing two games in less than 24 hours, and to hang on down the stretch was really big.” LT senior guard Nick Zeisloft led the hosts with 23 …

Lyons Boys Basketball Bounces Back, Demolishes Hilltoppers

Boys team recovers from disappointing loss to Riverside-Brookfield with 33-point win over Glenbard West.

Following a crushing home defeat to Riverside-Brookfield, Lyons Township boys basketball reverted to the enthusiasm and commitment shown in its first three victories Friday night. The Lions completely wore down Glenbard West away from home, 79-36, in a West Suburban Silver Conference matchup. "It was a completely level of energy and intensity [tonight]," Lyons head Coach Tom Sloan said. "The guys did a great job on the defensive end. We got defense to create offense, and for the most part on offense, we did a much better job tonight of moving without the ball to create better shot opportunities." Senior point guard Mark Sewall—who added eight points on the evening—echoed Sloan's evaluation of the team's performance. "It's always important …

LTHS Football Dismantles Leyden

High scoring first quarter leads to 54-7 trouncing, as Lyons moves to 7-1.

A 30 point offensive showing in high school football is often the mark of a quality team, even if its opposition isn't top of the line. A 30 point first quarter, however, is the mark of a blowout. The Lyons Township High School football team was the distributor of such a battering Oct. 15 as it triumphed over Leyden High School Eagles 54-7 on senior night at Bennet Field in Western Springs. The LT offense was unstoppable which allowed reserve players some playing time late in the game. "It was great to see us firing on all cylinders throughout the game," senior wide receiver and cornerback Mark Sewall said. "When we use our speed we can be a dangerous team, we just have to focus on limiting turnovers." LT didn't commit a turnover on the …
