All three men had arraignment hearings in DuPage County court on Monday, Pioneer Local reports.
All three men charged in the March 7 robbery of a juvenile that took place in an unincorporated area near Clarendon Hills plead not guilty in DuPage County court Monday, according to Pioneer Local. Kelechekwu Akuba, Leverenzel Booth and Jerron Wilbut made their pleas during separate hearings in front of Judge John Kinsella, who according to Pioneer Local informed the men that the state's attorney had filed aggravated robbery and armed robbery charges against the men in addition to the original robbery charges. The armed robbery charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, Pioneer Local reports. According to a filing from the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission, Kathleen Niew “presents a continuing danger to the public.”
The Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission has filed a rare petition to immediately suspend the law license of Kathleen Niew, the Oak Brook-based lawyer and radio host from Burr Ridge accused of mishandling millions in clients’ funds, the Chicago Tribune reports. Along with her husband Stanley, Niew, 56, was found partially liable in February for $2.3 million in damages to an Oak Park couple’s trust. According to the suit, Niew persuaded them to transfer $2.3 million into trust accounts she managed before her firm removed the money and used those funds for their own benefit. A judge overruled attorneys' objections and will allow cameras in the trial of Willow Springs resident Johnny Borizov, set to begin next month, for a Darien triple-murder.
The trial of a man charged with plotting the murder of three Darien residents will be open to photographers and videographers, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday, a first in DuPage County according to the newspaper. Johnny Borizov of Willow Springs will be on trial beginning April 16 for the murder of Jeffrey, Lori and Michael Kramer, who were shot to death in March 2010 by Jacob Nodarse in a scheme, prosecutors allege, plotted by Borizov and meant to kill Angela Kramer, daughter of Jeffrey and Lori, sister of Michael, and father of Borizov's son. Kathleen and Stanley Niew were ruled to be liable for damages related to $2.3 million that went missing while under their law firm's management.
Burr Ridge resident Kathleen Niew, her husband, and their law firm were found Tuesday to be responsible for mishandling more than $2 million an Oak Park couple transferred into trust accounts managed by Niew, the Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday night. The Trib reports DuPage County Circuit Judge Bonnie Wheaton submitted a "partial judgment of liability" against Kathleen and Stanley Niew, a candidate in this spring's Burr Ridge School District 180 board election, though the amount the couple will pay out is not yet known. Lisle: A second man charged in a July 7-Eleven robbery has pleaded guilty for his part in the incident, records show. Antonio Finley, 21, pleaded guilty to a robbery charge and was sentenced to six years in prison as part of a deal with prosecutors, who dropped several other counts against Finley. He was given credit for four months in DuPage County Jail and received a recommendation of a prison boot camp, which could shorten his prison time. In October, 17-year-old Steven Gayden was sentenced to four years in prison in connection to the robbery. He also was given a boot camp recommendation. Prosecutors allege Cuellar drove up on 18-year-old Joshua Holmes as he walked near the Lake Hinsdale Terrace apartments and fired six times, hitting Holmes who later died. During a hearing this week, Judge Daniel Guerin gave the case its second scheduled trial date after a planned January trial was bumped because of an attorney's conflict.
