In their final home game as Mustangs, Kevin Honn scored 20 points, Jamall Millison tallied 17, and Jerron Wilbut chipped in 12 for Downers South (22-5). Senior center Greg Garro had nine points and nine rebounds. Downers South head coach Jay Baum commended his upperclassmen after the win. “To their credit, they’ve gotten better as the year’s gone on,” Baum said. Hinsdale Central (17-10) took a 22-14 lead mid-way through the second quarter before the Mustangs got hot. Downers South finished the second quarter on a 10-2 run …

Mustangs Keep the Cannon, Defeat Hinsdale South 49-6

DGS beats Hinsdale South for the sixth straight year behind big efforts from its defense and running back Josh Williams.

The Rebel Cannon will remain in Downers Grove for at least another year. Despite a valiant effort by the Hornets, Downers Grove South extended the trophy’s stay by defeating Hinsdale South 49-6 Friday night in Downers Grove. The two rivals have battled for the Cannon every year since 1966. Although Hornet fans remain faithful, the Mustangs have now won the cannon six years in a row, meaning this year’s seniors are the third straight class to have never lost the Cannon. “We’ve always beaten Hinsdale South, so it’s nice to finish it off,” Downers South Senior Defensive Lineman Jeremy Ulrich said. The Mustangs, who improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division, were led again by running back Josh Williams, who …

High School Summer Book List Geared to Promote Lifelong Reading

Local schools talk about how they go about selecting titles that appeal to teens.

If you look at a Hinsdale South or Downers Grove South high school student’s bookshelf this summer, sprinkled amid classics such as Frankenstein and The Awakening, you’re just as likely to see contemporary favorites such as The Namesake and The Last Lecture. While summer reading lists are a mainstay in high schools throughout the area, the English departments at both schools have made a point to select books that foster a lifelong love of reading. Seniors at Hinsdale South have the option of choosing one book from a special list of recommendations curated by both teachers and administrators at the school, said English Department chair David Anderson.  Much like the “staff recommendation” shelf at a bookstore, the school’s staff members …

Boys Basketball: DG South Routs Hinsdale South

Downers Grove South 55, Hinsdale South 36. Jerron Wilbut, Jamall Millison spearhead outstanding defensive effort as Mustangs extend win streak to 10.

Downers Grove South is on a roll and there’s a simple reason for it–defense. The Mustangs extended their winning streak to 10 Friday night with a 55-36 boys basketball drubbing of visiting Hinsdale South, a team they squeaked past 58-52 on Dec. 3. “That’s all we’ve been stressing in practice,” Downers South guard Jerron Wilbut said. “It’s all we got to do is (play) good defense and control the ball on offense and get good shots.” Wilbut sparked the Mustangs, who improved to 17-3 overall and 6-1 in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division, at both ends of the floor. He scored 14 of his game-high 18 points in the first half to lead Downers South to a 32-17 halftime edge. The 6-3 junior also teamed with fellow guards Jamall Millison and …

Girls Basketball: Ukoro, Hinsdale South Turn Tables on Downers Grove South

Hinsdale South 51, Downers Grove South 34: Center's 13 points, 11 rebounds key great defensive effort as the Hornets win on an emotional Senior Night.

Hinsdale South center Uzo Okoro was held to just four points when the Hornets lost 42-40 at Downers Grove South back on Jan. 10. It was a much different story Thursday night. The 6-foot Okoro dominated at both ends of the floor, leading all players with 13 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks as host Hinsdale South exacted revenge with a 51-34 drubbing of the Mustangs on Senior Night in Darien. The win solidified the Hornets’ grip on second place in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division. Hinsdale South (12-9, 7-2) has a two-game lead in the loss column over the Mustangs (13-9, 6-4), who have lost five straight games. “I think we prepared a lot better this time,” Okoro said. “We knew what to expect and I think we had a lot more intensity…

Girls Gymnastics: Downers South Perfect in WSC Gold

Mustangs surpass 135 point total for the first time this season and beat host Hinsdale South.

It was a satisfying start of the week for the Downers Grove South and Hinsdale South girls gymnastics teams. The two squads wrapped up their regular season schedule on Monday at Hinsdale South in their West Suburban Conference Gold Division finale. Both teams scored season highs as the Mustangs beat the Hornets 135.3 to 124.25 and finished a perfect 5-0 conference season. "We tried some new things. We had two girls try new vaults which, you know, was our last meet to try some new things," Downers Grove South coach Kristyn Moavero said. "We were just looking to build confidence and get the kinks out. If you're nervous, don't be, because it's just gymnastics and that's the hardest thing for them to understand." The Mustangs easily surpassed …

Mustangs Edge Hinsdale South in Defensive Struggle

Franklin's late steal seals the deal for Downers Grove South in key WSC Gold Division girls basketball victory.

In a game filled with big defensive plays, Downers Grove South’s Tori Franklin had the most important one. With the game tied at 38-38, Franklin stripped Hinsdale South point guard Toni Romiti in the Hornets’ backcourt, scrambled for the loose ball and while lying on her back managed to get a pass to teammate Allison Dec. Dec went in for a layup with 1:09 remaining and the Mustangs held on for a 42-40 victory Monday night in Downers Grove to retain sole possession of second place in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division. “It was really close the whole game and I knew I could steal it; I’m just good at that,” Franklin said. “(Earlier in the game) I fouled, so I was a little hesitant, but I just tried and I got it and luckily Allison …

Lions Outlast Mustangs In Basketball Thriller

7-1 LTHS boys basketball continues win streak with non-conference victory at Downers Grove South

Lyons Township's senior sharpshooter Nick Zeisloft turned 18 years old on Saturday. Following Lyons' crucial 74-69 road triumph over Downers Grove South, he couldn't have asked for a much better birthday present. "I wouldn't have had it any other way," Zeisloft said. "It's a good 18th birthday now, because if we didn't win, it probably wouldn't have been that great." After trailing by as much as 12 points in the first half, the Lions battled back to narrowly overcome non-conference powerhouse Downers Grove South away from home. The win brings the La Grange side's record to 7-1 (2-0) going into the Christmas break. "They shot very well in the first quarter, and we knew they weren't going to keep shooting that well all night," Zeisloft—who …

Downers Grove South Cruises Past Hinsdale Central

Mustangs' girls' bowling team tops 3,000-pin mark for the first time this season.

Tracy Smith's 535 series led all bowlers in Wednesday's meeting between Downers Grove South and Hinsdale Central, but the Mustangs' junior was quick to point out what kept her from doing even better than the 178 she averaged for the night. "Splits," said Smith, who also rolled the only 200-plus game. "I was going high a lot in my last game, and I left a lot of splits." The Mustangs won 3,017 to 2,413 over the Red Devils in their home house in Woodridge, improving to 3-2 on the young season. South topped Morton by 113 pins in their meeting on Tuesday. "Yesterday, we were on tougher lanes and we struggled," Mustangs' coach Bob Topor said. "Today, I thought we did pretty well. They bounced back and bowled a little more of what they're …

Mustangs Sting Hornets With Fourth Quarter Rally

Downers South overcomes a slow start in road win over Hinsdale South; Ziggy Riauga finishes with 11 points, eight rebounds and six blocks.

Winning conference games on the road, as any coach will tell you, is never an easy task. The Downers Grove South boys basketball team learned that Friday night. The Mustangs rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Hinsdale South 58-52. For most of the game, the Mustangs (4-1, 1-0) struggled against the Hornets (1-3, 0-1) and their ability to drive the ball into the lanes and score off of rebounds. "We have to get better," Downers Grove South coach Jay Baum said. "To our credit, the kids found a way to win, but overall, we have to play better." The Mustangs didn't seem to have an answer for the Hornets' two big men, junior center Brock Benson and senior forward Bryson Pitts, on offense or defense. Pitts scored eight first-half points from …
