The state might take a crippling hit if Congress does not act before Friday.
Deep, nationwide cuts are geared to take place March 1. They're the first of decade-long $1.2 trillon budget cuts poised to go into effect unless Congress can compromise on a defecit-reduction plan. Here’s what Illinois stands to lose, according to the White House: U.S. Representative Dan Lipinski (IL-3) blasted the sequester that both sides must "end the blame game" and "halt the sequester" by passing the new Simpson-Bowles plan. Lipinski claims the plan would reduce the federal deficit by an estimated additional $2.4 trillion over the next 10 years through a combination of spending cuts, new revenue, and tax reform. "The sequester uses a meat cleaver when a scalpel should be used. It's not the way to go about responsibly reducing our …

Argonne National Laboratory received a $120 million federal grant to create revolutionary battery technology that could help promote American energy independence.
The Argonne National Laboratory received a $120 million federal grant that could help slash dependence on foreign oil, U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Western Springs) announced Thursday. Argonne, a non-profit research lab operated by the University of Chicago for the Department of Energy, will devote the grant to developing revolutionary battery technology for transportation and the electric grid, according to a news release from Lipinski's office. The federal funding will be delivered over five years and "has the potential of creating a revolution in battery technology that slashes dependence on foreign oil and makes our region the worldwide leader in battery manufacturing," the news release stated. "This award sets up Argonne National …

Continuing the Lipinski reign over Illinois's 3rd Congressional District, Dan Lipinski still considers himself a kid who grew up on Chicago's Southwest Side.
U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (D)was standing at the Orland Park Metra Station at 5 a.m. last Monday, shaking hands and passing out literature to voters in the newly redrawn 3rd Congressional District. Sign up for Oak Lawn Patch's newsletter and breaking news alerts. It’s a routine that the four-term congressman follows every two years when he’s up for reelection. In 2008, he beat the Republican and Green Party challengers in a 73-percent landslide. He is expected to easily win over Republican Rich Grabowski of Hometown, a Constitutional Conservative and favorite of local Tea Party groups. “We’ll keep fighting until the polls close,” Lipinski said. “I’m very hopeful in this district that I’ll get returned to office.” The scene circles back to …
GOP candidate and everyman Rich Grabowski says God is leading the way in his campaign to become Illinois's 3rd District congressman.
Richard L. Grabowski wants to be your next congressman representing Illinois's 3rd Congressional District. Known as Rich to his family, friends and supporters, Grabowski has been crisscrossing Illinois’s 3rd District that spans Chicago’s Southwest Side neighborhoods in the heart of Mike Madigan-country, west to Lemont, LaGrange and Western Springs, to the southern stretches of New Lenox, Homer Glen and Romeoville. Handily winning a three-person Republican primary—one of the candidates was a neo-Nazi who didn’t believe the Holocaust happened—Grabowski is confident he will beat the Democrat heir-apparent Dan Lipinski. Grabowski calls himself and Lipinski, both Polish Americans, “two skis in a downhill ski race” against powerful Illinois …

According to Medill Reports, Illinois' 3rd Congressional District representative is not making any public presidential endorsement for this November's election.
U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL) did not publicly endorse Barack Obama for president during a recent interview by Medill Reports published Tuesday. The Democratic congressman has represented Illinois' 3rd Congressional District, which covers much of the southwest suburbs, since 2005. As Medill Reports states, Lipinski has not been a rank-and-file Democrat in recent years. The Catholic congressman condemned the requirement pushed by the Obama administration that religious organizations need to provide contraception as a part of employee health plans, TribLocal reported in January, and Lipinski was the lone Democratic Illinois congressperson to vote against the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) in 2010. Lipinski is being challenged by …

With nearly 90 percent of the vote, incumbent Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Western Springs) has easily cruised by challenger Farah Baqai.
Incumbent Democratic 3rd District Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Western Springs) easily won the Democratic nomination to run for his fifth term in Congress on Tuesday, defeating challenger Farah Baqai by a vote margin of nearly 9-1. Faqai was challenging the moderate Lipinski from the left, but stood virtually no chance against a Lipinski name that is a perennial force in Cook County Democratic politics. “Tomorrow we go back to work—the work never ends,” Lipinski told supporters in Chicago’s Garfield Ridge. “I’m working to make sure that people who do bring a hard day’s work [and] who play by the rules get rewarded. That’s the most important thing. That’s what I stand for, and that’s why today we’ve come through with a big victory with your help.” …

The 3rd District representative continues a tradition of frequently bucking the majority of his Democratic party by voting instead for an Ohio representative.
Congressman Dan Lipinski, the Democrat from Illinois' 3rd District (which includes Western Springs, La Grange, La Grange Park, and parts of Burr Ridge) joined 18 other Democrats on Wednesday to vote against installing Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) as Democratic minority leader in the 112th Congress. Lipinski, generally considered a political moderate, is said to have had rocky relations with Pelosi, an outspoken liberal, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Instead, the Western Springs resident voted for Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), a fellow Polish-American beginning her 15th term in the House of Representatives. "During her long career in the House, Ms. Kaptur has always been a strong voice for American workers, especially those working in …

Congressman and Western Springs resident says he has "not forgotten who I represent."
Democrat Dan Lipinski proclaimed victory over Republican challenger Michel Bendas and Green Party challenger Laurel Schmidt to claim a fourth term as U.S. Representative from the 3rd District. With 69% of precincts reporting, Lipinski, a Western Springs resident, has picked up nearly 70% of the vote, and gave his victory speech at approximately 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night. "I said here six years ago that I was going to Washington to represent you, not to be a rubber stamp," Lipinski told a crowd of about 150 at the VFW Hall at 5858 Archer St. in Chicago. "And I have gone there, and I have not forgotten who I represent. I have seen a lot of other people do that, and others, even more, who don't have the courage to stand up for who they …

Experts say the incumbent Congressman, who represents La Grange and La Grange Park, has more name recognition than his unknown Republican opponent.
Daniel Lipinski should have no trouble being re-elected to Congress, despite the prevailing anti-incumbent sentiment this election cycle, political analysts say. Dick Simpson, a University of Illinois at Chicago professor who specializes in Chicago politics, said Lipinski, the representative from the 3rd Congressional District in Illinois for eight years, has strong name recognition in the district. Bruno Behrend, director of the Center for School Reform at the Heartland Institute, a nonprofit public policy analysis organization based in Chicago, agreed that Lipinski is well known in his district. Behrend said Lipinski not only benefits from his own four-term tenure, but also from the fact that his father, William Lipinski, held the seat …
