Red Devil Boys Surprise OPRF While Girls Team Falls in Basketball Doubleheader

Hinsdale Central snaps a seven-game losing streak with its 61-49 victory. Meanwhile, the Red Devil girls fall to the Huskies, 48-42.

It’s been a long time between victories for Hinsdale Central, as junior guard Brad Anlauf will attest. “We were on a seven-game losing streak so it was important for us to get this win tonight,” said Anlauf, who scored 12 points and helped the Red Devils hold off a fourth-quarter charge by visiting Oak Park-River Forest to surprise the Huskies, 61-49. “We just sort of almost forgot how to win.” Anlauf’s inside basket off a feed from Riley Strumillo gave the Red Devils a commanding 50-26 advantage early in the fourth quarter. But the quick, athletic Huskies have the ability to explode at anytime, and they did just that. OPRF stormed back with a 15-0 run, capped by two Brian Miller free throws. However, 6-6 senior Mike Ostojic (12 points) …

Hinsdale Central Wrestlers Lose to Visiting York

Dukes earn an 8-6 edge in matches won in toppling Red Devils.

Wrestling on Thursdays and Fridays in the West Suburban Conference's Silver Division are going to be dogfights this season, and if you want to win you better bring your 'A' game. York had its A-game on in Friday's matches with Hinsdale Central, winning 33-22 in a West Suburban Conference Silver Division showdown in Hinsdale. The Red Devils opened with a decision win by Tommy Ward at 119 pounds before York reeled off three straight wins to build a 16-3 lead. From there York never gave up the lead. "York came ready to wrestle, and we didn't," Red Devils coach Jason Hayes said. "We're missing a few starters and a few guys are sick, but that's part of wrestling. You have to learn to work through it, and tonight we didn't." Hinsdale Central …

Dukes Down Red Devils in Silver Division Opener

Forward Tom Garvin: 'The first half I was being too tentative...'

Hinsdale Central junior forward Tom Garvin had a simple mission for the second half of Friday's game at York. "I just had to go to the hoop. The first half I was being too tentative, turning the ball over too much," Garvin said. "I knew that if I went to the basket, they'd foul me and I went to the free-throw line." After just two points at halftime, Garvin exploded for 16 in the final two quarters, but the Red Devils still were unable to overcome an early hole and remained winless following a 64-54 loss in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division opener for both teams. Hinsdale Central (0-4) trailed 33-23 at halftime. Even with Garvin's scoring and a stronger effort in the second half, the Red Devils never again got closer than seven …

Red Devil Girls Fall in Final Minute

Hinsdale Central bows to Glenbard West after seven-point lead late in the game slips away. The Red Devils remain winless on the season.

The Red Devils' girls basketball team appeared to be on the verge of capturing its first victory of 2010-11 in the West Suburban Silver opener Tuesday night as it built up a comfortable seven-point lead, 49-42, with under two minutes to go. But, as head coach Tom McKenna noted afterward, "We just let it get away." Glenbard West's full-court press forced a handful of Hinsdale Central turnovers down the stretch, and the Hilltoppers scored the game's final seven points—including two free throws by Becca Folan with 32.9 seconds left—to lift them to a 51-50 victory. Despite the turn of events, Hinsdale Central did have two good looks at the basket late in the game. However, short shots by Christine Rush and Avery Anderson rimmed in and out. …

Benet's Big Boppers Bring Down Hinsdale Central

Frank Kaminsky and David Sobolewski single-handedly outscore Red Devils in Redwings' win Friday at Hinsdale South Tournament.

When you're winning games by 24.5 points, as Benet's boys basketball team has done through two games this season, finding specific things to focus on in practice can become difficult. But after Tuesday's 22-point win over Sandburg, Benet coach Gene Heidkamp had a clear message for his team. In Friday's 58-31 win over Hinsdale Central at the Hinsdale South Tournament, the Redwings appeared to get Heidkamp's message loud and clear. Benet outrebounded the Red Devils 45-27, led by 14 from Wisconsin-bound center Frank Kaminsky. "That was a major point of emphasis," Heidkamp said. "I was very disappointed Tuesday in our rebounding differential and how we attacked the glass. That's the backbone of what we do as a program. Last year, we were …

Basketball: Red Devil Boys, Girls Continue Play at Tipoff Tournament

Both teams seeking their first victories of 2010-11.

Turkey with all the trimmings, parades, football and Black Friday aren't the only traditions associated with Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving week marks the official start of the high school basketball season, and the Hinsdale Central boys and girls teams are already getting their fill of games. Unfortunately so far, neither Red Devil squad has netted its first victory. The Red Devil girls fell on consecutive nights to Neuqua Valley and rival Hinsdale South at the Hinsdale South Tipoff Tournament. Meanwhile, the boys team opened its season Tuesday at the same Tipoff Tournament, and came up on the short end against the Hornets. With point guard Toni Kokenis (now at Stanford) and a solid supporting cast, generating offensive wasn't an issue for …

Hornets Bring The Heat In Win Over Rival Red Devils

Hinsdale South's girls win 61-47 over Hinsdale Central in second-round play of the Hornets Tip-Off Tournament.

Coming out with energy can make all the difference in the world. Three days after getting buried early by Wheaton North, Hinsdale South's girls basketball team was determined to fight tooth-and-nail from the outset in Tuesday's game against rival Hinsdale Central. The Hornets did just that in registering a 61-47 victory at the Hornets Tip-Off Tournament. "I think we just came out prepared, knowing this was our chance against Central. That really motivated us," Hornets junior Andrea McNally said. "We definitely came out with more intensity on defense and we were ready." Early defensive intensity bore fruit for the Hornets, who put 21 points on the board in the first quarter while holding the Red Devils to eight points through eight minutes…

DiNardo, Pace Savor Playing at Wrigley Field

Hinsdale Central products suit up for Northwestern in historic game against the Fighting Illini

Jack DiNardo and John Henry Pace were teammates at Hinsdale Central midway through the last decade—a decade in which the Red Devils were perennial playoff qualifiers. These days, they're once again teammates at Northwestern. They've both experienced the thrill of playing in bowl games—DiNardo saw action for the Wildcats in the 2008 Alamo Bowl vs. Missouri, while Pace took part in the Outback Bowl against Auburn last New Year's Day. And last Saturday, they took part in history when they and the Wildcats stepped onto the field opposite the Fighting Illini. Yet this wasn't just any field. It was historic Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, but transformed into a gridiron for the first time in over 40 years. Even though the game's end …

A Page Turns at Hinsdale Central

McKenna ready to lead the Red Devils' girls basketball program.

With the Toni Kokenis era at Hinsdale Central now over, the Red Devils' girls' basketball program turns to a new core of players and a hall-of-fame coach in Tom McKenna. And they're all chomping at the bit. "I really like their attitude. They're very hard-working and they want to prove they're a good team," McKenna said. "We have kids that can play inside and outside and I like our intensity. They're eager to play and learn." Former St. Ignatius coach McKenna took over Central's program when Lindsey Montgomery stepped down after last season's 22-10 campaign. In 23 seasons, McKenna oversaw 407 wins at St. Ignatius, and the 36-year coaching veteran is the Red Devils' fourth coach in three seasons. Central's program has gone 128-30 over the …

Central Boys 14th in Class 3A Cross Country

The Red Devils' Billy Fayette earns all-state accolades at the Class 3A state cross country finals Saturday in Peoria.

Billy Fayette had a plan to close out his senior cross country campaign at Hinsdale Central. The Red Devils' leader wanted to go out with an all-state performance at the boys Class 3A finals at Detweiller Park on Saturday. Fayette did just that, turning back three runners--Lake Zurich teammates Pat Juras and Alex Brend as well as Stevenson senior Kevin Wood--by hundredths of a second to earn the 15th position, 16th overall, in Peoria. Fayette, taking advantage of near-perfect conditions, negotiated the 3-mile layout in 14 minutes and 39 seconds. "I had never been all-state before," Fayette said. "I just went out there and put myself in the mix. It was exactly what I was hoping for. I couldn't be any happier." On a glorious afternoon in …
