Not surprisingly, Burr Ridge compares very well to state averages according to the latest U.S. Census numbers released last week.
The U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday released estimates from its American Community Survey, which provides local statistics for the combined years from 2007 to 2011 on everything from housing to employment to marital status in communities throughout the country. The numbers look good for Burr Ridge. The village has an estimated median household income of $132,045, more than double the state average of $56,576. Burr Ridge's homeownership rate is 95.8 percent, compared to the Illinois average of 68.7 percent. The median value of owner-occupied units in Burr Ridge is $679,400, dwarfing the state's median of $198,500. On the employment front, of Burr Ridge's nearly 10,624 residents, 8,536 are ages 16 and older. Nearly 5,200 people make up the …

What do you say? The data reveals that married couples make up barely half of all American households.
The segment of the married U.S. population is about 51 percent, a decline of about 6 percent since the last census in 2000. In Illinois, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates about 52 percent of men, 18 and older, and 47 percent of women, 18 and older, are married. A societal snapshot As the Washington Post points out, the data reflects current conditions; meaning people who are unmarried today may not remain single over time. "(The data) are a byproduct of a steady increase in the median age when people first marry, now at an all-time high of older than 26 for women and almost 29 for men," says the Washington Post. According to an expert cited in The Huffington Post, the reason is twofold: "The fast-growing older population is more likely to …

Census also shows Burr Ridge population is generally older than that of surrounding communities.
The tallies are in and Illinois, like the U.S., is growing, getting older and considerably more diverse, according to the decennial census. From 2000 to 2010, Illinois’ Hispanic population grew at a rate five times faster than the state’s total population. Without this growth Illinois’ overall population would have decreased by a little more than 100,000 residents. Ballooning by 15.8 percent or nearly half a million people over the last decade, Illinois’ Hispanic population climbed just over 2 million residents, expanding their presence in communities across the state. In fact, Kendall County is one of five counties in the U.S. that saw the largest increase, more than tripling their Hispanic population since 2000. National statistics show …

Data from the 2010 Census shows that DuPage County District 3 must pick up around 5,000 residents. With Burr Ridge's eastern border location, the village should not see much, if any change.
With 2010 Census data compiled, redistricting is now taking place across the state, including DuPage County, where district lines are being redrawn. According to the DuPage County Redistricting Committee, the DuPage County Board, by law, must draw equally apportioned districts. Each of the six districts in DuPage must be drawn so that 152,821 people live in each. “We’ve been working hard to make sure our district lines do not change dramatically because we want our constituents to feel like they live in a fair and balanced district,” said DuPage County Board Member Brian Krajewski (District 3), who is on the Redistricting Committee. Census results mandate that DuPage County District 3 — which includes portions of Burr Ridge, Hinsdale, …

With the reality shows and 72-day marriages, unfortunately marriage seems to be treated like brief periods of going steady and then just cast off. While it certainly is a choice, and I know many who are in committed relationships, when kids are involved I think statistics show a more stable environment is best. But, of course, a ceremony and piece of paper won't change immaturity or …   more ›
