Red Devils Boys Hoops Looking for Bounce-Back Season

Second-year coach said he has a more experienced team than last season's that is now familiar with his style.

Last season was Nick Latorre’s first as head boys basketball coach at Hinsdale Central. The team had minimal returning varsity experience and went through plenty of growing pains en route to a 5-19 record. “It’s a whole new philosophy, a whole new style, a whole new culture,” Latorre said of his first season as a Red Devil after nine years as Driscoll Catholic’s head coach and two years as an assistant at Oswego. “This year has been much smoother to start the season out.” Latorre said it's hard to describe his philosophy in one phrase, but he said his teams practice hard, play hard, and take pride in competing. Senior forward Tom Garvin spoke to that. “I feel like I’ve never been on a team that works as hard as we do in practice,” Garvin …

Boys Basketball: Morton's Jarosz Too Much for Hinsdale South

Morton 54, Hinsdale South 53. Jeff Jarosz scores 35 points, including a runner with 18.6 seconds to beat Hinsdale South.

The Hot Read: In a game with four ties and nine lead changes, Morton and Hinsdale South battled for third place in the West Suburban Gold on Friday night. Morton led 21-16 midway through the second quarter, but Hinsdale South went on a 12-4 scoring run to lead at halftime, 28-26.
Coming out of the locker room, Morton senior Jeff Jarosz shot lights out as he tallied 15 points in the third quarter alone. Jarosz's output lifted Morton to a 45-39 lead at quarter's end. Hinsdale South regrouped in the fourth quarter with an 11-2 scoring run of its own. After trading baskets late in the fourth quarter, Hinsdale South junior Brock Benson swished two free throws to put the Hornets ahead 53-52 with 39.5 seconds remaining.
But on Morton’s next …

Boys Basketball: Hinsdale South Can't Close Against Proviso East

Proviso East 75, Hinsdale South 67: Pirates' 22 steals sink Hornets, erase 27-point first quarter.

The Hot Read: A 27-point first quarter by Hinsdale South’s Hornets went for naught. The Pirates forced 22 steals and tied the game at 32-all by halftime, then widened their lead in the third quarter and controlled the game the rest of the way. The Hornets came close a few times in the fourth quarter, but the Pirates’ aggressive halfcourt defense and athleticism were too much, forcing costly turnovers at inopportune moments for the Hornets.  Patch’s MVP: Proviso East point guard Keith Carter scored 22 points and had seven of his team’s 22 steals on the night. If he wasn’t scoring, he was setting up his teammates at the top of the key.  Key Stats: Down 27-16 after the first quarter, the Pirates recorded six steals in the second quarter—three…

Hinsdale South's Benson Takes Over

Junior center Brock Benson put up double-double in the Hornets' 55-53 victory over Leyden on Saturday night.

After notching a 55-53 victory over Leyden Saturday night, the Hinsdale South boys basketball team made it four wins in five games. The Hornets outrebounded Leyden 31-19, netted 8-of-14 shots from three-point range and staved off the Eagles in the waning moments. Hinsdale South improved to 15-7. Hornets coach Vince Doran was happy with the stellar effort his team has displayed. "Leyden is a dangerous team," Doran said. "You never feel like it's over against them. Once we got hot, we got more comfortable against their defense. Brock (Benson) did a phenomenal job on the boards." While the Hornets were raining down three-point shots, Benson was receiving all the attention with double-team defense. The 6-8 junior center finished with 23 points…

Boys Basketball: DG South Routs Hinsdale South

Downers Grove South 55, Hinsdale South 36. Jerron Wilbut, Jamall Millison spearhead outstanding defensive effort as Mustangs extend win streak to 10.

Downers Grove South is on a roll and there’s a simple reason for it–defense. The Mustangs extended their winning streak to 10 Friday night with a 55-36 boys basketball drubbing of visiting Hinsdale South, a team they squeaked past 58-52 on Dec. 3. “That’s all we’ve been stressing in practice,” Downers South guard Jerron Wilbut said. “It’s all we got to do is (play) good defense and control the ball on offense and get good shots.” Wilbut sparked the Mustangs, who improved to 17-3 overall and 6-1 in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division, at both ends of the floor. He scored 14 of his game-high 18 points in the first half to lead Downers South to a 32-17 halftime edge. The 6-3 junior also teamed with fellow guards Jamall Millison and …

Boys Basketball: Hinsdale South Holds Off Quincy

Balanced scoring and clutch free-throw shooting lift the Hornets to a 57-52 victory over the Blue Devils.

Hinsdale South’s Hornets have attained success stringing together wins as they hunt for the West Suburban Gold Conference lead. On Saturday night, the host Hornets got past Quincy’s Blue Devils 57-52 to keep pace with conference leader Downers Grove South. The Hornets (13-6, 4-2) had four players score in double figures: seniors Andy Nkansah and Joe Petrak with 12 points each, and juniors Phil George and Brock Benson with 11 apiece. “This a big momentum boost,” George said. “Coach said coming into this game that we control our destiny. If we keep playing confident like we did tonight, we can win conference.” The Blue Devils (8-10) didn’t go down without a struggle. The Hornets led 36-29 at halftime, with Nkansah scoring 10 points in the …

Boys Basketball: Hornets Sting Morton at Free Throw Line

Hinsdale South hits 17-of-18 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull away in a 66-57 victory on Friday night.

In the days leading up to Friday's game against Morton, the Hinsdale South's boys basketball team emphasized free throw shooting.  “This whole week we worked on free throws and it paid off,” said center Brock Benson, who finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds and sparked the Hornets to a 66-57 victory. Hinsdale South sank 17-of-18 free throws in the fourth quarter after the Mustangs were saddled with foul trouble. Overall, the Hornets hit 23-of-26 from the line.  The game went back-and-forth until the fourth quarter. After a terrible first quarter where the two sides combined for nine total points, both sides took the initiative on offense from the on. Forward Andy Nkansah scored eight second-quarter points—including two three-pointers—to…

Boys Basketball: By George, Hinsdale South Gets Job Done

Junior Phil George paces Hornets with 19 points in come-from-behind win over Wheaton Warrenville South

Hinsdale South stumbled out of the gate but eventually crashed through and brought home a 44-38 boys basketball victory over Wheaton Warrenville South at the Downers Grove North hoops fest on Saturday afternoon. Junior guard Phil George paced the Hornets with 19 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. "Coach always told us never to hang our head because the game's not over in the first quarter," George said of what coach Jim Thomas told his team. George was the only member of Hinsdale South to score in double figures, though, it seemed as if for a while that no Hornet would reach double digits in the scoring column. That's because Hinsdale South struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the game's opening quarter. Senior Ryan Johnson …

Devils Wrap Up Proviso West Tourney With Win

Hinsdale Central boys team enters two-week break with win over Foreman Thursday afternoon.

Hinsdale Central's 49-44 win over Foreman in the Red Devils' final game at the Proviso West Tournament Thursday afternoon may not have been a thing of beauty, but they'll take it. After taking Proviso East to the brink Monday, losing by one point in overtime to the eventual third-place finishers, Central struggled mightily in a loss to Fenwick Tuesday. Thursday, the Red Devils were just happy to get back in the win column. "It's huge to get a win at this tournament," Red Devils forward Mike Ostojic said. "Any win, we'll take it. We wanted to get that first one against Proviso East. We used (the loss to Fenwick) to motivate us. We got together and said that we had to regain our composure and play ball. We're a good team. We just had to come…

Red Devils Sluggish In Loss To Fenwick

Quick turnaround after close loss to Proviso East proves difficult for Hinsdale Central boys team at Proviso West Tournament.

After a draining loss to Proviso East late Monday night, Hinsdale Central's boys basketball team faced a quick turnaround at the Proviso West Tournament Tuesday. After playing the final game of the day Monday, an exhausting, one-point loss during overtime to the heavily favored Pirates, the challenge was shaking that loss off against Fenwick in the early afternoon Tuesday. A 59-48 loss that was not as close as the score may seem was not exactly what the Red Devils had in mind. The loss gives Hinsdale Central a day off Wednesday before returning to tournament play Thursday against Foreman at 12:30 p.m. "We just played bad," Hinsdale Central coach Nick Latorre said. "It's disappointing. We just got outrebounded and pushed around. That was …
