Boys Basketball: Hinsdale South Holds Off Quincy

Balanced scoring and clutch free-throw shooting lift the Hornets to a 57-52 victory over the Blue Devils.

Hinsdale South’s Hornets have attained success stringing together wins as they hunt for the West Suburban Gold Conference lead. On Saturday night, the host Hornets got past Quincy’s Blue Devils 57-52 to keep pace with conference leader Downers Grove South. The Hornets (13-6, 4-2) had four players score in double figures: seniors Andy Nkansah and Joe Petrak with 12 points each, and juniors Phil George and Brock Benson with 11 apiece. “This a big momentum boost,” George said. “Coach said coming into this game that we control our destiny. Overall, the Hornets hit 23-of-26 from the line.  The game went back-and-forth until the fourth quarter. Junior guard Phil George paced the Hornets with 19 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. "Coach always told us never to hang our head because the game's not over in the first quarter," George said of what coach Jim Thomas told his team. George was the only member of Hinsdale South to score in double figures, though, it seemed as if for a while that no Hornet would reach double digits in the scoring column. That's because Hinsdale South struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the game's opening quarter. Senior Ryan Johnson …
