Election 2013: 3 Candidates File For Burr Ridge Mayoral Race on 1st Day

Among the three are acting mayor Bob Sodikoff and 50 Capitols in 50 Days road-tripper Mickey Straub.

Weeks removed from his Abe-Lincoln-inspired 50 Capitols in 50 Days trek around the country, it appears Mickey Straub will have another tough task ahead of him: the race for Burr Ridge mayor. Straub, whose successful road trip can be read about here, is among the three mayoral candidates who filed their paperwork with village clerk Karen Thomas Monday to be on the April 9 ballot. It was the first day they were able to do so. Thomas said current acting mayor Bob Sodikoff and John Bittner are the other two who have filed. Sodikoff, who has served as a village trustee for the last 14 years, took over as acting mayor earlier this month after Gary Grasso's resignation. Sodikoff announced plans to run for mayor in November. Guy Franzese, Kathryn …

50 Capitols in 50 Days: Completed Trip a 'Dream Come True'

Burr Ridge's Mickey Straub returned home last week after wrapping up his six-week road trip in Springfield on Oct. 17.

Mickey Straub's 50 Capitols in 50 Days trip seemed daunting before it began. Who would've thought he'd finish it nearly a week early? Straub, a Burr Ridge resident, businessman and Abraham Lincoln enthusiast, set out on his 50 Capitols in 50 Days road trip in early September. He returned home to Burr Ridge last week for the journey’s finale in Springfield after hitting every state in only 44 days. On the steps of the Illinois capitol, Straub delivered his 50th rendition of the Gettysburg Address, the 16th president’s famous 1863 speech, in the company of family, friends and colleagues. “It felt great just to cross the state line,” said Straub, who had come from capitol No. 49 in Madison, WI. “It was nice just to be back in the home state…

Mickey Straub Says '50 Capitols' Trip Different than He Expected

Patch talked with Mickey Straub on the phone this week in between capitol visits down south and the Burr Ridge traveler said the trip has not been quite what he anticipated.

Mickey Straub said he realized during the first week of his "50 Capitols in 50 Days" trip across the country that the journey isn't just about patriotism and Abraham Lincoln. "It’s really about the people," Straub said over the phone while driving between Tallahassee and Montgomery Wednesday afternoon, "the people that you meet along the way that are unbelievable." Straub, the 55-year-old Burr Ridge resident and business man who set off Sept. 4 on his trip to recite the Gettysburg Address on the steps of every state capitol, calls the strangers that he's developed bonds with along his journey his "capitol angels."  He's been shown around state capitols along the east coast by political staffers, recited the Gettysburg Address alongside …

50 Capitols in 50 Days: First Day of Mickey Straub's Trip in Books

Mickey Straub kicked off his odyssey in Harrisburg, Pa., Tuesday and got some news coverage.

After a fun sendoff Saturday morning, Burr Ridge resident Mickey Straub's "50 Capitols in 50 Days" trip across the United States officially got underway Tuesday, and some media outlets are starting to take notice.  The 50 Capitols in 50 Days Facebook page told the story Tuesday. Straub's morning began at the Gettysburg Hotel and included a trip to the David Willis House, where Abraham Lincoln finished the famed Gettysburg Address, which Straub plans to read at all 50 state capitols in 50 days.  From Gettysburg, it was on to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania's capital, for Straub's first address. While there, Fox's local affiliate was there to interview the Lincoln enthusiast.   That local station is the only media outlet reporting on Straub's trip…

Mayor Gary Grasso Helps Send Off '50 Capitols in 50 Days' Traveler Mickey Straub

Mickey Straub left Burr Ridge Saturday morning for Gettysburg, Pa.; he begins his 50-day journey in Harrisburg on Sept. 4.

A small group of friends, neighbors and co-workers of Mickey Straub, as well as couple of notable public officials, gathered Saturday morning at the Veterans Memorial outside Burr Ridge's Village Hall to send off the 55-year-old resident as he begins his "50 Capitols in 50 Days" trip across the country. Straub, a 55-year-old Abraham Lincoln enthusiast, will begin on Sept. 4 what he hopes will be 50-day trip that will take him to all 50 state capitals. He plans to recite aloud the Gettysburg Address on the steps of each capitol building in an effort to bring attention to what he believes are the 16th president’s core principles: God, Liberty, Unity and Equality (GLUE). Man to Recite Gettysburg Address at 50 State Capitols in 50 Days

Mickey Straub, a Burr Ridge Abraham Lincoln enthusiast who wants to bring awareness to the 16th president's ideals, plans to recite the Gettysburg Address on the steps of every capitol building between Sept. 4 and Oct. 23.

Mickey Straub has an easy way of describing his upcoming trip across the United States. “I’m a guy from the land of Lincoln, in a Lincoln, quoting Lincoln,” he said. The trip itself, though, likely won’t be so easy. Straub, a 55-year-old Burr Ridge resident and Abraham Lincoln enthusiast, will begin on Sept. “The proverbial GLUE that holds the country together,” Straub said. "Visit every state capital" is an item on Straub's bucket list, but …
