Less than Half of D181 3rd Graders Hit Math Growth Targets

Superintendent Renée Schuster said Monday the district's administration is "not happy" with the MAP results that came at the end of the first year of widespread curriculum-compacting in third grade.

Editor's note: This story previously stated that 49.9 percent of District 181 third-graders achieved their MAP growth target in math during the 2011-12 school year, based on district documents linked to below. In fact, the number of third-graders who hit their math growth target in 2011-12 was 55.7 percent, district administrators confirmed Tuesday. Communications director Bridget McGuiggan said the incorrect number in the district's document was actually the percentage of third-graders who hit their growth target on the reading portion of the MAP test, not on the math portion. McGuiggan said the error will be corrected and brought to the attention of board members. The change is reflected in the story below.   The first set of District …

Legislation to Ban Teen Tanning in Illinois Heads to Gov. Quinn

The bill, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), would prohibit all teens 17 and younger from using UV tanning beds.

Legislation to ban minors from indoor tanning beds was sent to Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday after being approved by the Illinois Senate. House Bill 188, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), would ban Illinois minors age 17 and younger from UV tanning beds. Currently, minors ages 14 to 17 are allowed to tan if they provide a parent's signature. Spray-on tanning is exempt from the legislation, as is phototherapy, which applies to situations where a physician supervises tanning when it is necessary to treat a medical condition. Radogno said in a press release that she sponsored the bill to protect Illinois minors from the serious health risks involved with indoor tanning beds. “Not only do children not realize there …

Insert Applause Christine Radogno. You have taken money from the tobacco industry which kills millions of americans yearly but you throw your weight around the tanning industry. Sounds to me that the tanning bed companies need to step up their game and send you a check! You are just another lying politician! What a pathetic scum bag you are!   more ›

Your Take: Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken drivingat least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way.  On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. We reached out to readers in our near-Chicago west-suburban sites and asked them: should the DUI limit be lowered to 0.05 percent? Here’s some of the responses we got: Lori Galandak-Anthony…
