"I'm shocked," said Faleide of how many women need help, but don't ask for it. "They're embarrassed to admit they don't have health insurance, and they're reluctant to speak up to request a mammogram."

Faleide said he wants to tear down the barrier that keeps women from coming forward, especially those who are faced with a sudden need.

"Their husbands will lose their job and health benefits, but they won't tell anyone—especially in this area where so many people might have just lost a high-powered job."

Burr Ridge United Church of Christ made a commitment to the American Cancer Society last June to raise money through the Relay for Life, which will begin at 6 a.m. at on June 29. The free mammogram program is another way the BRUCC is trying to support the efforts of the ACS.

Faleide said that he is not getting an avalanche of requests for free mammograms, and that the church could help more people. He said those in need should not hesitate to contact him.

"Give me a call. Give the church a call," said Faleide.
