Viewfinder: CCSD 180 Students Exercise their Brains and Bodies at Family Fair

Students from Community Consolidated School District 180 and their families attend a Book Fair and Family Fitness Carnival at Anne M. Jeans Elementary School.

More than 100 students from Community Consolidated School District 180 came out with their families for an April 25 Book Fair and Family Fitness Carnival at Anne M. Jeans Elementary School.

The students completed passports which required them to participate in several fitness activities in the gymnasium and then visit the library to browse the book fair. Several parents joined in and were side-by-side with their kids for the activities.

Superintendent Thomas Schneider and board of education member Amanda Frankel led the initiative to get students exercising their brains as well as their bodies. The intent was to remind families that physical exercise and learning go hand-in-hand, especially with young children.

Schneider said more than 1,000 books were sent home with families as a result of direct sales and a “buy one get one free” promotion.

“We had $3,100 in sales, which is a lot for us,” Schneider said. “That almost tops our previous record. So, we’re thrilled that our students are once again excited about reading.”

Throughout the evening, 50 books, 30 posters and 25 playground balls were also given away as raffle prizes.

Fifteen student athletes from Burr Ridge Middle School were on hand donating their time to work several of the fitness activities in the gym.

“We eventually want to begin some philanthropic activities, and we’re starting by getting the extracurricular programs active as a pilot group since many of them are leaders in the school,” Schneider said.
