Original Freedom Writer Shares His Inspirational Story With Burr Ridge Families

Manuel Scott told District 180 families that life's obstacles do not need to become barriers.

Manuel Scott, a self-proclaimed “terrible student,” was smoking pot and drinking beer before he even turned 11. He witnessed his abusive stepfather beat up his mom on a regular basis and never had a relationship with his biological father.

Despite these circumstances, Scott overcame the odds against him. He now holds two degrees, is a supportive husband and father of three, and serves as a motivational speaker.

In the movie “Freedom Writers,” the character of Jason Finn is a student whose attitude is transformed by a dedicated teacher played by Hilary Swank. Finn's character is based on the life of Manuel Scott. The movie tells the story of a young teacher who encourages her class of inner-city students to apply themselves and dream big. Most of the students went on to college and then graduate school.

“Our mission as a district is to carry on with this inspiration. Not just feeling good, but doing good, to reach our dreams,” said Schneider.

Scott did not have strong family ties growing up, but he found role models in teachers and coaches. Today, Scott says his biggest source of inspiration is his family.

Manuel laid out the foundations for a healthy home and stressed the importance of having a solid support system to students in the gymnasium of Anne M. Jeans Elementary Thursday night.

“You need to have a healthy home: no substance abuse, no verbal/physical abuse, respect, manners, hard work, and punctuality. Home is the foundation for everything else," said Scott. "I wrestle with my background ... I made it out all okay; I got 2 degrees and am working on my PhD. My younger brother had the same exact upbringing, though, and he is in and out of prison. I am lucky.”

Manuel has shared his story in appearances on “The View,” “Nightline” and numerous high-profile events.

“People need change, and people need hope," said Scott. "Seeing lives change, because of the work I am doing, that’s what this is all about.”
