Hinsdale South Doubles Team Returns to State Tennis Meet

Hinsdale South's Kim Warpecha and Emma Adcock qualified again for the state tennis tournament after a top-12 doubles finish in 2010 while state-title contender Hinsdale Central advanced its entire lineup and Lyons Township advanced both singles players.

The , and Lyons Township girls tennis teams once again will be well represented at the state tournament.

The Red Devils advanced both singles entries and doubles teams with top-four finishes at the Hinsdale Central Sectional Friday and Saturday while also winning the sectional team title with 32 points.

Hinsdale Central juniors Marika Cusick and Caroline Lorenzini (21-1), the defending state doubles champions, won the sectional doubles title and seniors Kristy Hamilton and Jackie Altansarnai (16-1) took third. In singles, sophomore Alex Solovyev (21-2) and junior Tiffany Chen (17-4) were second and third, respectively. Everyone but Chen returns from last year’s state lineup that earned a second-place team finish to Lake Forest.

Hinsdale South senior Kim Warpecha and junior Emma Adcock earned a return state trip by taking fourth in doubles. Warpecha also qualified for state in doubles as a freshman.

LT sophomore Alex Chatt (28-1) won the sectional singles title, and senior Katie Miller (7-6) was fourth. This is Chatt’s second state berth.

The double-elimination state tournament begins Thursday with Prospect High School serving as tournament central.

In the sectional final, Cusick and Lorenzini won 6-1, 6-2 over Nazareth junior Alysa Straub and sophomore Lexie Petrovic, fifth in state last year, after the Red Devils topped Warpecha and Adcock 6-3, 6-0 and Nazareth gave Hamilton and Altansarnai their first loss of the season 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals.

Hamilton and Altansarnai outlasted Warpecha and Adcock 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the third-place match.

Cusick and Hamilton are making their third straight state trips in doubles, taking fourth as a pair in 2009. Warpecha and Adcock and Hamilton with graduated Julia Quintero both tied for ninth at state doubles last year.

Altansarnai is making her fourth state trip but first in doubles. She qualified twice for Plainfield North before transferring.

Chatt won the won the sectional singles title 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 over Solovyev after Solovyev won their three-set match for the No. 1 singles crown at the West Suburban Conference Silver Division Meet Oct. 8.

Chen defeated Miller 6-0, 6-0 for third place. With a state berth on the line, Miller won her quarterfinal match 6-2, 7-5 over Hinsdale South senior Lindy Wing, a 2010 state singles qualifier.

Solovyev tied for 17th in singles at state last year. Chatt also qualified but did not compete because of a hip injury that initially forced her to withdraw from her sectional semifinal match with Solovyev.

Hinsdale South junior Andrea Wakim lost to Chen in the singles quarterfinals. LT’s doubles teams of junior Maeve Plunkett and sophomore Maggie Schwartz (12-8) and sophomore Samantha Sherman and freshman Megan Hickey (3-3) lost in the quarterfinals in straight sets.
