D86 Superintendent Nicholas Wahl Resigns

Wahl's resignation, which is effective immediately, was accepted by the school board at Monday night's meeting at Hinsdale South.

The Hinsdale Township High School District 86 Board of Education voted unanimously to accept the unexpected resignation of Superintendent Nicholas Wahl at Monday night’s meeting at Hinsdale South.

Wahl was not present at the meeting. Assistant superintendent for instruction Bruce Law was appointed acting superintendent.

The vote came after the board deliberated in closed session for approximately 20 minutes. All six board members present voted to accept the resignation. Jennifer Planson was absent.

Wahl worked as District 86's superintendent for eight years.

Reading from a statement handed out to audience members after the vote, Board President Claudia Manley said Wahl submitted a request last week to negotiate a resignation agreement that would include the waiving of a 120-day notice period stipulated in his contract.

The board agreed to honor the request, despite it coming just before the start of a new school year.

“The receipt of this request was unexpected,” Manley said. “We are unaware of his future plans or reasons for the request.”

Patch has reached out to Wahl seeking comment, but the former superintendent has so far not responded. It was reported Tuesday that he has accepted the position of superintendent with a school system in Indiana.

Manley said Wahl’s resignation will not impact the opening of the 2013-14 school year, which is set to begin on Aug. 23 after an Aug. 20 freshman orientation.

“After serving the district for eight years, Dr. Wahl has the board of education’s wishes for success in his future endeavors,” Manley said.

Wahl is the third District 86 administrator to leave the central office this summer, following the departures of business director Jeff Eagan and human resources director Troy Courtney.

In addition to those three central-office administrators, former Hinsdale Central principal Mike McGrory announced in April he was leaving for a new job in Iowa.
