Federal Funds Available for DuPage Communities Following Blizzard

President Obama issues disaster declaration to help villages and some non-profits recoup loss of funds battling the blizzard.

Burr Ridge, other DuPage communities and some non-profit organizations are eligible to seek federal funding to recoup funds spent on blizzard recovery.

On Thursday President Barack Obama issued a Presidential Disaster Declaration for DuPage County that will allow those entities to seek reimbursement of up to 75 percent of funds related to the blizzard that dropped 20 inches of snow on the area.

David Gervino, a spokesman for the DuPage County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, said the type of assistance offered under this declaration is different from assistance offered after the flooding in 2010. Gervino said because damage to private property was minor, assistance to homeowners and businesses was not included as a part of the current declaration.

“We’re delighted to be able to work closely with FEMA and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency to bring this much-needed assistance to governmental entities in DuPage County,” said Dan Cronin, DuPage County Board Chairman. “In today’s economic climate that involves budget cuts and governmental entities having to ‘do more with less,’ this federal assistance is going to be a big help to communities that desperately need it.”

Cronin said that over 100 entities including DuPage County Government, municipalities, townships, park districts, library districts, fire protection districts and others have submitted data totaling more than $4.7 million in blizzard-related expenses.
