A Downers Grove man has been charged with the murder of his mother after prosecutors say he shot her to death Thursday morning in a Burr Ridge parking lot.
Michael Zaky Bassaly, 27, was charged Thursday with the murder of his mother, 61-year-old Yvone Zaky Bassaly, according to a joint release by the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office and the Burr Ridge Police Department.
Michael Zaky Bassaly was the only suspect police took into custody. He was also the only witness and was the person who called 911 after the shooting.
He is scheduled to appear in bond court Friday at 8 a.m. It is a first-degree murder charge.
"No additional information is available at this time," the release states. "Further details will be released in bond court."
The shooting took place around 1 a.m. in the parking lot of St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church's preschool on 79th Street. The victim was transported to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m.
Deputy Chief Marc Loftus of the Burr Ridge Police Department said he has been told neither the suspect nor the victim are members of the church.
"We believe it to be an isolated incident," Loftus said earlier Thursday. "There’s no danger to the community."
According to Loftus, Thursday's is the first murder in the 57-year history of Burr Ridge.
