Substitute Teacher Charged with Sexual Abuse Back in Court

Steven E. Reynolds, of unincorporated Hinsdale, has been present at two brief status hearings since his arraignment in March.

A substitute teacher from unincorporated Hinsdale was in court Wednesday for a second status hearing since at his arraignment in March.

Steven E. Reynolds, 27, of the 600 block of 55th Street, was serving as a substitute teacher and freshman basketball coach at Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park when he was arrested by the DuPage County Sheriff's Office on Feb. 6. He was charged after friends of the victim, a Sandburg student, told authorities about a Jan. 28 incident at Reynolds' home during which the alleged abuse occurred.

There has been little public movement in the case so far. The two status hearings have been brief, little more than requests for continuations. Reynolds, who is not in the state's custody, has been present for both.

The next status hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. July 9.

DuPage County State's Attorney spokesman Paul Darrah said the case is still in discovery and no motions have been filed by either side to this point.

"At the last two hearings there have been requests for more discovery," Darrah said.

Reynolds' attorney, Joseph Laraia of Laraia and Laraia, PC, has told Patch multiple times that he will not discuss the case outside of the court record.

According to the state's attorney's office, the victim told her friends about the alleged contact on Jan. 28. The friends then informed Carl Sandburg school officials, who immediately passed along the information to the Orland Park Police Department.

An investigation by the DuPage County Children's Center resulted in February's charges, the state's attorney's office said.
