Thursday's Shooting 1st Murder in Burr Ridge History

A 62-year-old woman was shot and killed outside a Burr Ridge church at 1 a.m. Thursday.

A 27-year-old man's fatal shooting of his own mother outside St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church early Thursday morning is the first murder to take place in Burr Ridge in the village's 57-year history, according to Deputy Chief Marc Loftus of the Burr Ridge Police Department.

The incident wasn't classified as a homicide until Thursday evening, when a first-degree murder charge against Michael Zaky Bassaly, of Downers Grove, was announced. Bassaly's victim was his 61-year-old mother, Yvone Zaky Bassaly.

"There have been some in areas that were unincorporated and later became incorporated," Loftus said.

John Gilbert pleaded guilty to the 2009 murder of Jason Dragos, a coworker at a trucking company that according to Loftus was in an at-the-time unincorporated part of DuPage County adjacent to Burr Ridge.

Thursday's shooting took place around 1 a.m. in the parking lot of St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church's preschool on 79th Street in Burr Ridge. The victim was transported to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m.
