Heather Fields Subdivision Considering Security Cameras

The Burr Ridge neighborhood may become the first in the Village to set up security cameras at subdivision entrances that stream video to police.

The Heather Fields subdivision of Burr Ridge—around Plainfield Road and Garywood Drive—may become the first in the Village to have entrances monitored by security cameras, the Doings Burr Ridge reports.

According to the paper, the Burr Ridge Police Department has offered the option for neighborhoods to purchase cameras for $6,600 a pop, to be added to the network that covers several high-traffic areas in the Village; cameras must also be connected to a wireless hotspot that costs $8,300 if one of the Village's current 20 don't reach.

The local homeowners association president, Donna Shackleton, told the paper the consideration was motivated by local security scares, the Boston Marathon bombing and the 2011 murder of Kelli O'Laughlin, which took place only about 250 meters from the Heather Fields entrance, across I-294.

"We all were reminded of how important cameras can be,” Shackleton told the paper.

Burr Ridge Police Chief John Madden spoke positively about the decision to the paper, saying such cameras were "one heck of an investigative tool."
