Elm School in Burr Ridge is No. 27 on the Chicago Sun-Times' rankings of the 50 best elementary schools in the Chicago area, and Gower Middle School was No. 29 on the newspaper's middle school rankings.
The Sun-Times says rankings are based on 2012 reading and math ISAT and PSAE results of students at each school, measured against a state average.
"The rankings include percentiles, reflecting the percentage of Illinois students who scored the same as or worse than the average student at each ranked school," reads the full explanation of how the Sun-Times ranked the schools.
Just ahead of Elm at No. 26 was a fellow District 181 school, Oak School in Hinsdale, and at No. 21 was Prospect School in Clarendon Hills. Walker School, The Lane School, and Madison School were all District 181 schools that cracked the top 50, at Nos. 34, 35, and 39, respectively.
The top five elementary schools and top seven middle schools all are located in Chicago.
