Gower Middle School advances four to regional science fair.

More than 50 parents and siblings browsed the 15 projects on display during Gower Middle School’s Feb. 17 science fair. The most popular project was Ricky Pena’s Van De Graaff electrostatic generator, which provided many shocks throughout the evening.

Pena allowed spectators to experience electromagnetic shocks by touching various metal conductors, or by touching the generator itself. His project received an award but will not advance to the regional science fair since it was an exhibit and not an experiment. Four projects were selected to advance:

  • Athan Arhos' experiment on the effect of different food minerals on bones.
  • Ben Vandenbosch, Nick Burke and Rohan Chinwalla’s experiment on the effects of multitasking on your brain.
  • Mika Deshmukh and Tori Bene’s experiment on yeast being a “rising star.”
  • Srinivas Kaza and Michael Chang’s experiment on whether or not optimized java can run faster than unoptimized C/C++ on various platforms.
