Meet Katie Barkstrom: BRMS Teacher, Photographer

Burr Ridge teacher wields a camera in her free time.

Suits and ties scurried through the halls of Burr Ridge Middle School on their way to meetings while Katie Barkstrom, sporting a hoodie and sweat pants, was seen ushering students to the buses.

Barkstrom joked with many of the kids but casually kept them moving. Just because it was pajama day at the school didn’t mean she was going to let them lay down on the job.

I teach fifth grade at Burr Ridge Middle School. It’s definitely a challenge because every day is brand new and I never know what’s going to happen. They keep me on my toes, but that’s why I love them.

What street do you live on?

Palisades Road.

What do you like about Burr Ridge?

I’ve lived in Burr Ridge for my whole life, which is 27 years, except for when I went to college and completed a year studying abroad. I like Burr Ridge because people are down to Earth and fun, and it’s a beautiful town too. Everyone is so friendly in a neighborly way and always willing to help somebody else out. I like that.

Do you have any hobbies?

I took a photography class in high school, liked it and took more in college. And now I’ve started my own photography company. I don’t have a whole lot of time to devote to it now, but it’s something I love to do and it relaxes me. I have my first wedding scheduled for this summer, but I focus more on family portraits and shooting special events. It’s another way for me to contribute to other people’s lives while having fun myself.

What community issues are important to you?

I think the new downtown Burr Ridge is looking fabulous and I think it’s going to attract a lot of people to the community. Hopefully it attracts more than just commerce. I’m sure once people drive through town more and more while on their way to shop, they’ll see just how great Burr Ridge is and invest in our community by moving here.
