Free Stroke Conference for Paramedics

The Silver Cross Emergency Medical Services (EMS) System will host a free Stroke Conference Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 for paramedics who are interested in increasing their knowledge of neurovascular trauma and stroke.  The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Silver Cross Hospital Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox.  Advanced registration is required by Feb. 14, 2104.  More information is available at www.silvercross.org/neuro or by calling (815) 300-7426.

 

Participants will learn how to identify pre-hospital considerations for head trauma, recognize the role of the emergency department in triaging acute stroke patients and coordination with paramedics in the field, and review current state-of-the art endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke including clinical trials. Faculty will share with participants an enumerated detail differential diagnosis of vascular injuries and head trauma endovascular and discuss endovascular and surgical management and also pre-hospital Standing Medical Order for the stroke and head trauma patient.  Finally, paramedics will learn how to recognize indications for the treatment of hemorrhagic strokes and strategies involved in the management of affected patients along with endovascular options and blood pressure management.

The conference will be led by Dr. Harish Shownkeen, Medical Director of the Neuro Interventional Program at Silver Cross Hospital.  Course faculty includes Dr. David Mikolajczak, Medical Director of the Silver Cross EMS System; Dr. Richard Burgess, Stroke Neurologist; Dr. M. Kamran Khan, Neuro Interventional Radiologist; Penny Eriks, RN, BSN, Silver Cross Hospital Stroke Coordinator; and Erika Ball, Silver Cross EMS System Educator. The conference is free.
