Patch Roundup: Hospital Reattaches Severed Fingers, Pit Bulls Attack Elderly Pair

Also this week: a child-pornography arrest, an emotional salute to a soldier killed in Afghanistan and an attempted robbery in Glen Ellyn.

 

It's the weekend again, and we're going to lead with something positive—and positively incredible: how a surgery and therapy in Burr Ridge gave a man back his index finger and thumb and returned him to 60 percent to 70 percent functionality. Bravo for science!

In somewhat sadder news, Elmhurst police were forced to kill two pit bulls who attacked two elderly residents. Thankfully, both of the attacked residents are recovering. And, as always, we have our mix of interesting west-region news from the past week below.

Burr Ridge—Patient Has Thumb and Index Finger Reattached in Burr Ridge—A man nearly lost his thumb and index finger to a power saw, but surgeons at the Loyola Center for Health in Burr Ridge were able to reattach them.

Elmhurst—UPDATED: Police Release Information About Victims in Monday's Dog Attack—Elmhurst police were forced to shoot two pit bulls after they viciously attacked two elderly people in Elmhurst.

Wheaton—Police Arrest Wheaton Man, 59, for Child PornographyJohn Diebold faces three counts of aggravated child pornography, including two counts for possession and one count for dissemination.

Batavia—VIDEO: Emotion, Celebration at Chris Patterson Memorial Service—A service was held on Jan. 6 at Batavia's Immanuel Lutheran Church for a 20-year-old North Aurora soldier, who was killed in Afghanistan on January 6.

Glen Ellyn—Two Charged with Attempted Robbery in Glen Ellyn—A Glen Ellyn police officer intervened during an attempted robbery; the sergeant witnessed two individuals try to rob a 49-year-old man while he was walking on the sidewalk along Roosevelt Road.

St. Charles—St. Charles Fire Officials Investigating Cause of Gas Line Fire—Officials are working with NICOR to determine what caused a one-inch gas line to become impaired and catch fire on Thursday morning.

Hinsdale/Clarendon Hills—Hinsdale to Take Stricter Stance on Private Ice Rinks—A resident complaint about a nearby front-yard rink prompted a village committee to take notice and pledge to make sure the rinks are not neighborly nuisances.

Geneva—Two of Geneva's Favorite Sons Die on Same Day—A community is in mourning as Merritt Kingdecorated war hero, seven-term alderman and Geneva's historian emeritus—and Geneva History Center artist and volunteer Dick Jaeger died of natural causes Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012.

Western Springs—Reverse Osmosis in Western Springs: An Overview—Western Springs, already unique for using well water and not Lake Michigan water, is undergoing the most expensive project in the Village's history to bring residents purer drinking water.

Lisle—Proposed Single Family Development Would 'Reinforce' Lisle's Existing Home Values—A home building group presented its preliminary plans for a 163-home development called Arbor Trails; building company representatives said they did not expect home prices to lower the village's average home rates.

La Grange/La Grange Park—LGP Trustees Accept Grant Money for Public Works Facility Following Heated Debate—A heated debate in La Grange Park over whether to accept state funds to help cover the costs of repairs on the public works facility was approved 4-3.
