Because temperatures, for the most part, stayed above freezing during the storm last night, snow accumulation in the western suburbs was far less than the 2 to 6 inches that was predicted.

Thursday at 6:17 p.m.

Just stepped in from outside, and the snow is falling thick and fast. 

In the interest of public safety, the Hinsdale Police Department posted a link to to a helpful webpage earlier today on its Facebook page: 

"As the first winter storm approaches, remember to drive carefully and review your preparedness plans. Visit this website for some suggestions: www.ProtectDuPage.org."

According to the Mapquest traffic map above, there's another accident in Oak Brook. This one's at York Road and 31st Street.

It appears there have been no accidents in Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, or Burr Ridge at this time, but just up Route 83 in Oak Brook and Oakbrook Terrace, there have been a couple.

Expect congestion if you're near the accidents, which took place at Route 83 and Roosevelt Road, and at Route 83 and Oakbrook Center/Hodges Rd.

Holiday travelers beware.

Based on information from Flightstats, the Chicago Tribune is reporting today that about 450 flights out of O'Hare and Midway.

Southwest Airlines, the Trib reported, canceled all Midway flights after 4:30 p.m. today.

Thursday at 2:15 p.m.

The storm is on its way. 

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warningeffective until 3 a.m. Friday. 

"Rain will change to snow from west to east late this afternoon or early this evening," the warning reads, "with snow becoming heavy at times. The heaviest snowfall and lowest visibility should occur in the immedate Chicago metro area between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Snow will linger through the night tonight. Very strong winds will develop as the snow arrives and continue Thursday night."

The warning says to expect between 2 and 6 inches of snow accumulation.

From Tuesday...

AccuWeather is reporting a blizzard is on its way as it unfolds near Colorado and Kansas Wednesday and heads northeast to Michigan and Ontario by late Thursday, producing high winds over the Plains, Midwest and the East.

According to AccuWeather:

Over the Plains and the Upper Midwest, where snow falls and wind gusts reach 50 mph, extensive blowing and drifting snow is in store with local whiteout conditions. Widespread travel problems are anticipated with this storm. 

The skies should remain cloudy in Burr Ridge for the rest of Tuesday. There's a chance of rain and/or snow in the evening hours, according to AccuWeather.

Wednesday will be partly sunny until clouds roll in around 1 p.m. There's a 64 percent chance of rain between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m., which is expected to continue through Thursday morning. By midday Thursday, the rain is expected to turn into snow.

AccuWeather reports 1-3 inches of snow could accumulate by Thursday evening. The National Weather Service reports winds will blow between 20 and 30 mph Thursday afternoon, with gusts as high as 50 mph. 

"Anyone who plans on traveling across the Midwest Wednesday night through Thursday night should be prepared for difficult travel, especially for areas west and north of Chicago," the National Weather Service says.
